Hi Claire

I thought Robert Hood died early 1780s, the newspaper said he was only Preacher at Newcastle upon Tyne a short time [began about 1780], when he became ill.

I suspect Robert Hood might be buried at Ballast Hills Dissenters Burial Ground? However, the Registers only go back to 1792, despite some Memorials surviving from early 1700s.

Just to finish

Robert Hood dissenting minister was buried at St Andrews Newcastle upon Tyne 20 June 1782.

Described as a diligent faithful pastor who kept an academy in Brampton but little was recorded on his life.

Hi, Mark

The register pre 1792 maybe missing but the headstones propped against a wall & flatstones
in paths with epitaphs/M I's are still there in Ballast Hills Dissenters Burial Ground.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hi

MI's for Durham and Northumberland are online, some with pictures some without. Some with inscriptions some without (just give date of burial)

I'm going to need time going through Heworth MI's for John Hood burial 1800. Nothing in the search for a Hood but there are plenty of pictures of eroded/damaged gravestones to peruse  ::)

Looked at a few trees for the Middleton family but all have Ann Brown as Ann Brignal. Can see a few Ann's born at the time but nothing standing out to me.

Finally back to the Wetherston/Hood/Scott MI. There was a mention of daughter Margaret Renos ?  - Margaret Wetherston was married to a Michael Renwick or Rennick. I see that name has cropped up as a witness in a marriage Mark has put up.

Claire

Added: For Durham and Northumberland there are 170 Hood burials/MI's in total - quite a few post 1900.

Hi Claire,

Wetherston/Hood/Scott MI

I've been looking at George hood ( a mariner) X Maudland marriage 1731 Scarborough

likely Children ?

George Hood baptized Scarborough 1733 father George - likely marriage George

John Hood (Later of Selby baptized Scarborough 1737 father George Hood X Eleanor Wetherston marriage 1756 Newcastle upon Tyne

I'm wondering if there's a connection to Margaret Wetherston in your post above
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Dave

There is a George Hood 1740 Baptism at Newcastle upon Tyne

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NDNG-Y4T?cid=fs_copy

More likely to be the husband of Eleanor Weatherston(e).

Thomas Fawthrop of Selby was a Cooper and trained John Spencer.

1770 Duty Paid on Apprentices Register (attached) it says:-
Tho's Fawthorpe, Selby, Cooper, Jno Spencer.

George Hood could have learnt his trade and/or business skills from John Hood's Landlord, John Spencer, where John Hood lived 1790 to 1802.

Grocers used and probably sold, storage tubs, wash tubs and buckets made from wood by a Cooper, sometimes known as a 'White Cooper'.

John Spencer, a Grocer, died a 'Gentleman' at Selby in 1809, so he knew how to handle people, buy in, sell, keep accounts and make a profit too, this could of made George Hood, very astute on all basic business matters.

Well this is a good pointer to John Hood of Selby being the father of your George - Jane Hood wife of John Hood mariner was aged 65 at her death 1803 and she'd be age 48 in 1786 to have George a bit old. but not impossible to have a child. In reality George being a minor till he was age 21 years old in 1807 and would have had no records on him except maybe school records, unless went to a private boarding school with John away at sea a lot and Jane ageing in her years to look after George.
Anyway George's missing years as an adult man 1807 to 1812.

Last - an outside possibility - Jane Hood came from Gateshead and John was in port in Gateshead - George born out of wedlock and John and Jane walking out together jumped over the brush also together - not unusual them days

Hi Mark,

Just been rereading this:- Quote from your post above.

FamilySearch has
John Spencer *** X Ann Jervis married 17 November 1724 in Kirk Sandall Yorkshire England
James Cockin *** X Mary Gervis marriage 18 May 1755 Barnby upon Don, Yorkshire, England,
Villages of Kirky Sandall and Barnby Dunn are next to each other and about 15 miles from South Kirby

Witness James Cockin*** to George Hood X Sarah Russel marriage 1815 Selby

John Spencer the grocer/cooper buried 1809 Selby age 75 = born 1734 [/color]

Charles Turner who married Maudland Hood in 1794

Charles Turner baptised South Kirkby 1770 was the Son of Thomas Turner, Blacksmith and Elizabeth Johnson. The Sons tended to train as Blacksmiths and then move to other places. If the Turner, Blacksmith at South Kirkby, died, then one Turner, Blacksmith, seemed to move back in the earlier Census decades.

Jane Hood wife of John Hood burial 1803 Selby aged 65 = born 1738

A name of interest to look at for Jane Hood above and/or as a separate illegitimate mother of George Hood b 1786

Jane Cockin baptised 8th Jan 1736 father Christopher Cockin of Fishlake Yorkshire.( Near Barnby Dunn)

Need to find of this Jane married someone else

Being Cockin witness to George and Sarah marriage 1815 Selby

Cockin's stem Doncaster area

5 things that stand out

1) Spencer name -   Mrs Maudland Turner nee Hood - grandfather was a Spencer of Scarborough

2) John Spencer the grocer and a cooper of Selby

3) The piece that I've been looking for ' where did George Hood born 1786 ish who appeared in Selby 1812 learn to be a businessman' - John Hood the grocer come cooper was an astute business man as your post.

4) 1841 c says George Hood was born in Yorkshire

5) All years are in the time period for your George Hood.

Witness James Cockin to George Hood X Sarah Russel marriage 1815 Selby

Suspected  James Cockin was from Luddington,

Robert Cockin X Elizabeth Gibson marriage, 1760, in  Luddington,

Richard Gibson the Cooper of Selby Bankrupt 1810 Wren Lane Selby (Any link there  ???)

Make what will of this  ???

Thanks Dave, a bit early, do you think and whether this is the Jarvis or Jervis / Jervas / Gervas family linked to Cockin of Barnby Dun, Yorkshire, is not known?

But here is the 1713 Clandestine Marriage of Robert Hood, Widower and Ann Jarvis, Widow.

Smith looks to be the occupation, looking at the other marriages on the page.
