1835 Newcastle Journal, 16th May

At South Shields, in East King-street, suddenly, on the 10th inst. aged 60, Ann, widow of the late Mr. Wm. Day, shipowner.

1811 There is an Admin for a William Day, Ship Owner of Westoe, St Hilda with an Ann Day applying of East King Street in the Township of Westoe.

One of the three on the Admin including Ann Day, was Christopher Wawn of South Shields.

The other was Thomas Skiprey?

These are awkward!

Mark

Added: "Westoe was originally a village near South Shields"

Hi All

Although the surname looks like Skiprey, there is a Will on the Durham Wills Project of a Thomas Skipsey ship owner, mentions wife Jane.

In the 1780s there is a baptism of an Isabel to a Thomas & Jane at South Shields St Hilda. Surname here is Skiprey.

Smattering of Skiprey people in the North East - most migrating to America.

Hi Claire

Thank you.

I trying to go back backward on the Day side of George Hood's 1837 marriage (see previous replies today). Forward may confirm Birthplace if Jane was found in a Census.

But found a Thomas Day in 1851.

Children of late George Hood (lost at Sea 1840) and his Widow Jane Hood (nee Day) Will Proved 1841 were:-
Jane Ann Hood
John Laidler Hood to inherit my Estate at Cloughton Yorkshire.

The late George Hood's Brother was John Hood.

Also mentioned in the Will, Thomas Day (there was a Thomas Day, witness at their 1837 Marriage, which gave the Fathers of both (a few replies ago).
 ----------
1851
11 Nixon Street, St Andrew, Newcastle upon Tyne
Thomas Day, Head, 43, Ship Owner & Brickmaker, employing 5 men, born Durham, South Shields.
Jane Ann Hood, Niece, 12, born Durham, South Shields.
Geo Wm Hood, Nephew, 10, born Durham, South Shields.
Eleanor Beal, Servant, 28, North Shields, Northumberland.

Mark

Added: There are two different Jane Hood born South Shields in Census, about 1839. But the above looks correct for us.

Jane Day & Thomas Day were baptised the same day at South Shields, St Hilda bapt 21st March 1810 (Jane Day born 1805 / Thomas Day born 1807)

Parents:
William Day, Shipowner, Native of Stokesley, Yorkshire, by his Wife
Ann Nixon, Native of Newcastle

Parents tie up the newspaper 1835 Deaths notice at South Shields of Ann Day, Widow, of Wm Day, Ship Owner (above).

Does not look like these Day will go back to the late Jane Gibson, of Newcastle, who had a William Day and other Day as Nephews.

Hi Mark

In George Hoods Will dated 1840 - on the 3rd page you will notice that Thomas Day is noted as a Chemist.

In 1841 John Laidler Hood is with his grandparents in Scarborough.

In Westoe we have

Thomas Day aged 30 druggist born in county
Jane Hood aged 30    Ind. Not born in county
Jane aged 3
George 6 months both born in county
Mary Wright 15 (think - FS)

Thanks Claire

I'll copy & paste my 1851 transcription:-

Ann Day (nee Ann Nixon, Native of Newcastle), the Mother of Jane Hood (nee Day) was 60 when she died in 1835, giving her an approximate Birth age of 1775.

St Andrews, Newcastle Baptisms
November 1774
6th, Ann D of Joseph Nixon, Shipwright.

Thanks for that snippet too, re Thomas Day, Chemist. I suspect he took on the role as Ship Owner.

Also interesting is Will witness John Park, there was an E. Park present at the 1837 Marriage of George Hood = Jane Day.

Will was written 12th March 1840, so George William Hood wouldn't named.

Good spot, re Thomas Day (mentioned in the Will) when he went to Prove the Will he gave his occupation, Chemist.

So Nixon ties up and in 1851 the family are at St Andrews Newcastle at 11 Nixon Street, an unlikely coincidence?

1851
11 Nixon Street, St Andrew, Newcastle upon Tyne
Thomas Day, Head, 43, Ship Owner & Brickmaker, employing 5 men, born Durham, South Shields.
Jane Ann Hood, Niece, 12, born Durham, South Shields.
Geo Wm Hood, Nephew, 10, born Durham, South Shields.
Eleanor Beal, Servant, 28, North Shields, Northumberland.
 ----------------
I'm going to bring these two Hood forward.

Because two Sons of James Hood & Sarah Arundel (with middle names) were Painters at Newcastle and they might be present at marriages and sign their names in full.

That Army record of James Hood born Selby, do you remember it Claire, confirmed two of James Hood's Sons were Coach painters at Newcastle (it will be printed off and filed).

Hi Mark

Just out of curiosity if you know ? - how old was this George Hood who married Jane Day August in 1837  ::)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
