Amended: Some information about the Ship Inn, South Shore, Gateshead.

South Shore also known as New Greenwich and occasionally The Salt Meadows.

Rebuilt, it would appear.

Became the Schooner in the 20th Century.

Now totally renovated and renamed Fog on the Tyne

1787 Whitehead's Newcastle Directory, under Gateshead
Hood John, publican, Ship, South Shore.

1789 and 1811 Gateshead Land Tax

We copied and pasted parts of the Gateshead Land Tax, online listings of 1789 and 1811 into a Word document side by side (attached, slide over to see 1811).

1789 Occupied by, John (Mr.) Hood.
1811 Occupied by, A. (Esq.) Hood, South Shore.
[A. Hood, Esq.]

Looks like William Hawks had died by 1811, but premises occupied by Hawks is still clearly marked in 1811.
1811 Occupied by W. (Esq.) (reps. of) Hawks, South Shore.

So John Hood, publican, of The Ship, South Shore, Gateshead, looks to be linked to A. Hood, Esq., by 1811.

Location of the Ship Inn, South Shore, Gateshead, described 1857

1857 Newcastle Courant, 10th April
TO BE SOLD BY PRIVATE CONTRACT
The SHIP INN and TENEMENT HOUSES,  adjoining Messrs Hawks, Crawshay, and Co's Factory, South Shore, Gateshead.
Apply to Roger Middleton, on the premises.

The Ship Inn, adjoined the Factory of Hawks, Crawshay and Co., South Shore, Gateshead, 1857.

1903 Newcastle Daily Chronicle, 22 December 1903
Building Contractors desirous of Tendering for the whole of the works required in the errection and completion of the "Ship" Hotel, South Shore, Gateshead, for George Bell, Esq., are invited.
Messrs J. Oswald and Son, 33 Mosley Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Added: just looked again at the 1903 advert and the word "Ship" is definitely in commas, so the pub was known as the "Ship".

Looks like a new "Ship" South Shore, Gateshead, was built.
 ----------
Added: George Hood, Son of John Hood, baptised Gateshead 1st October 1786, is likely the Son of the Publican, John Hood of the Ship, South Shore, Gateshead.
 -----------

Added: just to keep me on my toes, in the newspapers 92 years later ...
By 1878 there was also a:-
Ship Inn, High Street, Gateshead.

Middleton and his link to Brown Reply 629

I'm wondering if these Brown characters link to the Brown in Richard Gibson of Selby descent, or a coincidence?

The Wife of Roger Middleton of the Ship Pub., at South Shore, Gateshead (where John Hood occupied previously), was Ann Brown.

All born Newcastle on Tyne (except Elizabeth Hall)

Ship Inn, New Greenwich
Rodger Midelton, Head, Mar, 45, Inn Keeper,

Elizabeth Midelton, Daur, 14, at Home
Mary Midelton, Daur, 11, Scholar
Elizabeth Hall, Serv, U, 18, General Servant, born Durham, Gateshead

George Brown, Boat Builder is the next family in the 1851 Census (the late Jonathan Brown, Ship Builder also occupied the Ship Pub, South Shore, Gateshead up until 1822 when he offered it To Let), so it looks like the right Ship pub in 1851  ;D

Definitely the Ship pub on the South Shore, Gateshead, the locality had also been called New Greenwich ...

A Short History of Gateshead
The best known heavy engineering firm of old Gateshead was, of course, Hawks, Crawshay & Sons. The firm was started in 1748 by William Hawks; at New Greenwich, at the South Shore.

Added: In the 1861 Census Roger Middleton, gave his Birthplace as Tanfield.

Roger & Ann Middleton, Memorial, is at Gosforth and a photo was in the next reply to this quote.

I decided to try & take Roger & Ann Middleton's children forward and may have
been successful with Elizabeth Middleton in the hope of a relative, no such relative in 1861 to 1881 Census, not checked after 1881.

When Roger Middleton & Ann Brown, married in 1832 there was a John Thompson present.

I wondered if anyone can now get back on Ann Middleton (nee Brown) who died late 1851 and born Newcastle, there are a few Ann Brown, born Newcastle, please?

On the grave and in the GRO Death Index Ann Middleton (nee Brown) was 49 yrs, in late 1851.

I'm not a Tree searcher on Anc, but there might just be a good reliable one, that expands the family enough to get back on Ann Brown?

Thanks Mark

It looks like the John Hood innkeeper of the Ship or Ship inn was related to Anthony Hood who was involved in business and politics in Southshore and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Your suggestion John Hood baptism 1745 Gateshead Shoemaker (Cordwainer) could be the same John Hood of the Ship inn Southshore or Gateshead (South of the river Tyne anyway)

So going back to trades of your George Hood of Selby being copper, brewer and tanner (Leather) would fit with shoemaker and local innkeeper need of a local cooper with barrel upkeep.

Big question - was Newcastle Anthony Hood esq related to Hood's of Scarborough and Selby. (By Sea ?)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hi Mark,

(In basic overview !  broad stand back look of the whole.)

If John Hood the  mariner of Scarborough, later died Selby 1819 with daughter Maudland Hood / Mrs Turner also lived in Selby, - was not George's father but related to your George of Selby, meaning the Scarborough Hood's may have been related to Hood's of Newscatle on Tyne, Gateshead, Southshore and also South Shields by easy sea & river travel and Richard Gibson being from the Tyne originally (Though as you have stated in the past it could be just coincidence the Gibson link)  ??? ::)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thomas Fawthrop of Selby was a Cooper and trained John Spencer.

1770 Duty Paid on Apprentices Register (attached) it says:-
Tho's Fawthorpe, Selby, Cooper, Jno Spencer.

George Hood could have learnt his trade and/or business skills from John Hood's Landlord, John Spencer, where John Hood lived 1790 to 1802.

Grocers used and probably sold, storage tubs, wash tubs and buckets made from wood by a Cooper, sometimes known as a 'White Cooper'.

John Spencer, a Grocer, died a 'Gentleman' at Selby in 1809, so he knew how to handle people, buy in, sell, keep accounts and make a profit too, this could of made George Hood, very astute on all basic business matters.

Well this is a good pointer to John Hood of Selby being the father of your George - Jane Hood wife of John Hood mariner was aged 65 at her death 1803 and she'd be age 48 in 1786 to have George a bit old. but not impossible to have a child. In reality George being a minor till he was age 21 years old in 1807 and would have had no records on him except maybe school records, unless went to a private boarding school with John away at sea a lot and Jane ageing in her years to look after George.
Anyway George's missing years as an adult man 1807 to 1812.

Last - an outside possibility - Jane Hood came from Gateshead and John was in port in Gateshead - George born out of wedlock and John and Jane walking out together jumped over the brush also together - not unusual them days
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

The overview over the years suggests a very good chance George Hood of Selby, was linked to John Hood, Mariner, of Selby, born Scarborough, Yorkshire and his daughter Maudland Hood (by Elizabeth Hood daughter of John Spencer of Scarborough).

Maudland Hood's Grandfather was John Spencer of Scarborough and I believe Maudland Hood's Grandmother might be Mary Spencer (nee Barton). Because Mary Spencer signed at Elizabeth Spencer's first Marriage at Scarborough to John Leppington 31st October 1756. John Smith, the other witness.

Half of the Barton Family of Scarborough were Quakers (first half 18th Cent.), who moved to Malton, Yorkshire and elsewhere.

Any Quaker connection would explain why there was a Quaker witness Frances Stears at the marriage of Charles Turner and Maudland Hood, in 1794.

James Hood's Will, of Scarborough, Proved Dec 1782, stated his Father was John Hood and his sister was Jane Wardale.

James Hood, son of John Hood of Scarborough was buried at Old Malton in 1781.

1772 Abraham Wardle married Jane Hood (signed Abraham Wardell or Wardele), at New Malton.

Claire did some research into Bridget Nicholson of Rawcliffe. I found a lineage in a Dades Register and took Bridget Nicholson back a bit further to a Barton of Malton, but can't see a direct link early 18th Cent., to the Quaker Barton who moved from Scarborough to Malton.

One in my family line married a Grubb and is also linked in my Tree to a particular Grubb family in Yorkshire (confirmed in M.I., Certificates, Census, newspaper notices, a Will and some early 20th Century Funeral Notices, who name those present and their places). Rather interesting that another line from this particular Grubb family in Yorkshire marries twice with the Turner descendants of Charles & Maudland Turner (nee Hood).

Remember Abraham Hodgson of Hull, who was one of several appointed Guardian to Samuel Nicholson of Rawcliffe and George Hood of Selby buying up their property at Selby, Abraham's name crops up twice in my wider Avatar Tree, one in a Census as a Visitor with his Wife [who seems to be a Jackson? at marriage], interesting that this other Hodgson in my Tree, linked to a place named by my Grandmother 50 years ago.

Of course Sarah Hood of Selby (nee Russell) Grandparents were Hodgson.

R P Taylor, related to James Hood of Selby, who ended up in Derby emailed me some items and he was making enqiries into Jackson, I think possibly because of Arundel, Arundle, Arundale.

Russell of Selby were a huge family at Selby.
 ---------------------
There are probably about 6 or more, different Hood families in the Newcastle upon Tyne, area, circa 1780 - 1820.

George Hood, Master Mariner of South Shields, lost at Sea 1840, leaving a Will linking him to Scaby / Cloughton, Yorks, so he might be related.

Robert Hood of Brampton, Cumberland, Dissenting Minister.

Robert Hood of Newcastle, whose daughter Jane Hood married rev. Robt Stodhart at Gateshead, in 1808.
One daughter was Mary Ryle Stodhart born 20th July 1810 in the Parish of St Dunstan, Stepney.
Mrs Stodhart, wife of the rev R. Stodhart, died 23rd June 1829 at Epping aged 40, daughter of the late Robert Hood of Newcastle (newspaper source).
On 21st October 1830 Robert Stodhart, wid'r of St Mary, Whitechapel went on to marry Sophia Black of Woolwich, widower, present Thomas S Burt ; Rob Ward ; Alice E Burt, at Woolwich, Kent.
In 1841 they are at Providence Place Finsbury, St Mary, Islington.
Robert Stodhart, 60, Dissenting Minister, N.
Sophia, 60, N.
With family Ann 25; Jane 24; Mary 23 and 2 F.S.
Family Vault at Islington Green, mentioned in an 1846 notice, which I didn't find out about until we had searched out all the above.

Hood from Berwick.

John Hood sailing in with a Ship from Inverness, which led me to find another Hood and place in Scotland.

The Elizabeth Selby Hood, daughter of Mr Hood of Kilfinnan, Scotland.

Plus the established long term resident Hood of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Then this Anthony Hood, Esq., and John Lionel Hood, who are seemingly linked to the Hood granted Arms.

Some are impossible to work out, the Parish Registers of Marriages are not online (only rather poor B. T., from 1754 to early 1800s), so we cannot see who was present at Marriages.

Who do you think John Hood mariner of Selby/ Scarborough father George was ?

George Hood father Robert Hood -baptised 3 Sept 1704 Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, looks a good contender with the sea a connection to Scarborough

John Hood father George Hood - baptised 22nd March 1738 Scarborough
George Hood X Maudlin Spencer - married 13 Jan 1731 Scarborough
