I cannot find the Middleton couple in the 1851 Census to confirm the Birthplace of Ann Middleton (born Ann Brown)?

1841 Gateshead, Durham, Census.
So[uth] Shore.
Roger Middleton, 38, Publican, Y.
Ann Middleton, 39, N.
Margaret Middleton, 8, N.
Elizabeth Middleton, 5, N.
Mary Middleton, 1& 1/2, N.
Roger Middleton, 1& 1/2, N.
Jane Young, 21, F. S., Y.

In the 1861 Census at Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne,
Rodger Middleton, Wid'r, 56, Formerly Innkeeper, Born Durham, Tanfield.

1843 Newcastle Courant, 24th November
At the South Shore, on the 17th inst., aged 4 years, Roger, twin son of Mr Roger Middleton, Innkeeper.

1851 Newcastle Guardian & Tyne Mercury, 1st November
At South Shore, on the 26th ult. aged 42, deeply lamented, Ann, wife of Mr Roger Middleton.

Please note 42 yrs in two other records was 49 yrs.

GRO Index 1851 Dec Quarter, Ann Middleton, 49 years, Gateshead, Reg'n District.

The Middleton Memorial is at St Nicholas, Gosforth, Northumberland and using the newspaper, memorial and research in last post.

Ann Middleton died 26th October 1851, aged 49 years.

Can anyone find Ann Middleton in the 1851 Census, please?

Mark

Got it, just typed Roger, variants ticked, (surname, left blank) Census year 1851, Birth 1805 -/+ 2 years, Where - Gateshead on F M P

All born Newcastle on Tyne (except Elizabeth Hall)

1851 Gateshead, Durham
Ship Inn, New Greenwich
Rodger Midelton, Head, Mar, 45, Inn Keeper,
Ann Midelton, Wife, Mar, 47,
Margaret Midelton, Daur, 18, at Home
Elizabeth Midelton, Daur, 14, at Home
Mary Midelton, Daur, 11, Scholar
Elizabeth Hall, Serv, U, 18, General Servant, born Durham, Gateshead

George Brown, Boat Builder is the next family in the 1851 Census (the late Jonathan Brown, Ship Builder also occupied the Ship Pub, South Shore, Gateshead up until 1822 when he offered it To Let), so it looks like the right Ship pub in 1851  ;D

Definitely the Ship pub on the South Shore, Gateshead, the locality had also been called New Greenwich ...

Snippet of Page 80
A Short History of Gateshead
The best known heavy engineering firm of old Gateshead was, of course, Hawks, Crawshay & Sons. The firm was started in 1748 by William Hawks; at New Greenwich, at the South Shore.

Two points

George Hood of Morpeth, Innkeeper, who died before the 1851 Census, also looks to be a contender with a link to the Gibson surname?

Added some general information about: George Hood of Morpeth, died 8th April 1848, aged 68.

Newcastle Courant, 21st April 1848, 22nd April.
... Mr James Hood, Chemist, Morpeth, was elected a Town Councillor in the room of his late father, Mr G. Hood.

George Hood's Public House was apparently called The Lord Hood, at Morpeth and one of his properties was Percy Court.

Morpeth Herald, 2nd May 1857
24th ult. aged 72, Jane, relict of the late Mr George Hood, deeply lamented by a large circle of friends.

Newcastle Journal, 30 Sept 1863
At St George's Presbyterian Church, Morpeth, on the 29th inst., by ... the rev Thos. Robinson, of Risley, Lancashire, to Eleanor, eldest daughter of the late George Hood, Esq., of Morpeth.

1822 Forster Nicholson & Mary Morrison, Widow, of Lesbury
DDR/EJ/MLA/1/1822/71   28 March 1822
Allegation, with bond, by Forster Nicholson, of Hebburn (Northumberland), Northumberland, farmer, bachelor for marriage to Mary Morrison, of Lesbury, Northumberland, widow at Lesbury, Northumberland sworn before Thomas Shute (surrogate). Surety in bond: George Hood, of Morpeth, Northumberland, innkeeper.

Mary Morrison was a Widow, age 21 and upwards. This "upwards" is not helpful!

But was this the first Marriage of Mary Morrison? ...

Second Point

1787 Whitehead's Newcastle Directory, under Gateshead
Hood John, publican, Ship, South Shore.

1789 and 1811 Gateshead Land Tax

We copied and pasted parts of the Gateshead Land Tax, online listings of 1789 and 1811 into a Word document side by side (attached, slide over to see 1811).

1789 Occupied by, John (Mr.) Hood.
1811 Occupied by, A. (Esq.) Hood, South Shore.
[A. Hood, Esq.]

Looks like William Hawks had died by 1811, but premises occupied by Hawks is still clearly marked in 1811.
1811 Occupied by W. (Esq.) (reps. of) Hawks, South Shore.

So John Hood, publican, of The Ship, South Shore, Gateshead, looks to be linked to A. Hood, Esq., by 1811.

Location of the Ship Inn, South Shore, Gateshead, described 1857

1857 Newcastle Courant, 10th April
TO BE SOLD BY PRIVATE CONTRACT
The SHIP INN and TENEMENT HOUSES,  adjoining Messrs Hawks, Crawshay, and Co's Factory, South Shore, Gateshead.
Apply to Roger Middleton, on the premises.

The Ship Inn, adjoined the Factory of Hawks, Crawshay and Co., South Shore, Gateshead, 1857.

1903 Newcastle Daily Chronicle, 22 December 1903
Building Contractors desirous of Tendering for the whole of the works required in the errection and completion of the "Ship" Hotel, South Shore, Gateshead, for George Bell, Esq., are invited.
Messrs J. Oswald and Son, 33 Mosley Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Added: just looked again at the 1903 advert and the word "Ship" is definitely in commas, so the pub was known as the "Ship".

Looks like a new "Ship" South Shore, Gateshead, was built.
 ----------
Added: George Hood, Son of John Hood, baptised Gateshead 1st October 1786, is likely the Son of the Publican, John Hood of the Ship, South Shore, Gateshead.

Added: Just to keep me on my toes, in the newspapers 92 years later ...
By 1878 there was also a:-
Ship Inn, High Street, Gateshead.

Could this George Hood Innkeeper of Morpeth death age 68 in 1848 = born 1780 and 1741  census has him age 60 or born 1777 - 1781-  be George Hood son of John Hood  baptised 1st October 1786 - If he was of John Hood Innkeeper Gateshead  of the Ship South (Gateshead)
Though 6 years those days to be baptised would be unusual for an established business family of a parish run administration and church close kit community  ???

Versus

Your George Hood a brewer and barrel masker of Selby with two ages 28 at marriage Selby 1815 = born 1787 and his death age 1845 Selby aged 60 = born 1787  an alot nearer 1786 baptism Gateshead also if the John Hood of the Ship pub/inn inn keeper was his father also goes with
George of Selby being brought up around brewing and barrels (Cooper).

Could be either George Morpeth or Selby  :-\

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

We can rule out George Hood of Morpeth who died 1848, being the Son of John Hood, because his Father was Alexander Hood, according to what is left of the engraving on the Headstone on a photograph and making checks.

Good Afternoon

In a prior post a question - who looked after the children of Elizabeth Hood nee Gibson when she passed. What if the family who disappeared from Selby records circa the same time - Richard, Eleanor and their daughter Elizabeth Gibson, they could have moved back up there. They're likely family and seems plausible.

Which leads me back to the surname Gibson, I've been looking for marriages for Richard and Eleanor's daughter presuming she survived into adulthood- the surname is prolific in these parts.

You have to think too , your George Hood named two of his children possibly after the Gibsons, so they meant something to him. I think finding what happened to them, and looking into the Gibsons up north is an idea.

And whatever happened to William Cook is another

Hi

Interesting:

So we have a John Scott bondsman to John Hood & Elizabeth Gibsons marriage . More than likely same man mentioned in the MI, or a big coincidence.

1745 - James Waterstone mar. Eleanor Finlason

1756 - George Hood mar Eleanor Wetherston

27 Aug 1775 John Scott mar Eleanor Hood. Witnesses: George Waterston and Wm. Richardson

Hi Claire

Thank you for your reply and dobfarm for his.

I thought too, that some of the information in the second quote today (above), related to John Scott, Bondsman to the John Hood & Elisabeth Gibson, 1779, Newcastle upon Tyne, Marriage.

I know dobfarm likes the John Hood = Elizabeth Gibson, 1779 marriage, Newcastle upon Tyne, connection,  because of the probable link to Richard Gibson, Cooper of Selby, Yorkshire, which my George Hood, took over c.1811 to March 1812, before his 1815 marriage at Selby, Yorkshire to Sarah Russell.

Laidler alias Leadley & Geo Hood, South Shields
There might well be a non-direct connection, also because of the Laidler / alias Leadley to Scalby / Cloughton, near Scarborough in the Will of George Hood, Mariner, of South Shields, whose boat was washed up circa 1840, Will Proved 1841.

Cook of Eastfield, Sturton Grange
I have found a printed Tree of Cook of  Eastfield, Sturton Grange, who had Mariners at Shields:- Ralph Cook ; Henry Cook & Thomas Cook, late 18th Cent., too.

Cook of Gt Yarmouth
Shame, those Cook don't seem related to William Cook of Great Yarmouth Mariner, some of whom, whose c.1850s Wills, I recently summarised on Rootschat.

1804 Daughter, Elizabeth Hood = William Cook.

Elizabeth Golton / Goulton marr Chester Newby
Also Richard Goulton's Widow, Elizabeth, married Chester Newby, George Hood's Bondsman.

Associates of George Hood of Selby
I've also been through all the other names George Hood of Selby was associated with, also those in my Avatar Tree research and there is nothing to link my pesky ancestor and these other associates, to Newcastle.

James Hood m Ann Phillips, at Hull
Also I found Ann Phillips of Hull, marriage, I think.

Cath G Wood has the G crossed out on the original - looks like the enumerator started to write Gibson and then changed it.

So if this James Wood / Hood is the father of Ann Gibson (formerly Hood) plus all of the other Hood children from the 1841 census, then he was born Osmotherley c1787 - meaning we are still missing the James Hood bap 1795 Tynemouth, s/o James Hood of All Saints & Ann Phillips of Hull.

If you look at the replies above and below (where this quote leads to Reply #277 ), we were looking at a Census where Hood (transcribed as Wood) and Gibson were in the same household, I think at Ropery Lane, Sunderland in 1841, then 50 Silver Street, Sunderland in 1851.

Hi Claire & Mark

I was googling and found (some old post pf Mark's)

WEB25 Sep 2016 · John Hood of Gateshead was the Publican of the "Ship" in the 1787 Directory (later known as The Ship Inn), but for how long is unclear?

---------------

George Hood son of John Hood baptised Gateshead 1st Oct 1786

These are known facts

Has any research been done of John Hood publican of the Ship Gateshead bearing in mind publicans moved around the country even in them days  ???
