Hi

MI's for Durham and Northumberland are online, some with pictures some without. Some with inscriptions some without (just give date of burial)

I'm going to need time going through Heworth MI's for John Hood burial 1800. Nothing in the search for a Hood but there are plenty of pictures of eroded/damaged gravestones to peruse  ::)

Looked at a few trees for the Middleton family but all have Ann Brown as Ann Brignal. Can see a few Ann's born at the time but nothing standing out to me.

Finally back to the Wetherston/Hood/Scott MI. There was a mention of daughter Margaret Renos ?  - Margaret Wetherston was married to a Michael Renwick or Rennick. I see that name has cropped up as a witness in a marriage Mark has put up.

Added: For Durham and Northumberland there are 170 Hood burials/MI's in total - quite a few post 1900.

Who do you think John Hood mariner of Selby/ Scarborough father George was ?

George Hood father Robert Hood -baptised 3 Sept 1704 Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, looks a good contender with the sea a connection to Scarborough
---------
John Hood father George Hood - baptised 22nd March 1738 Scarborough
George Hood X Maudlin Spencer - married 13 Jan 1731 Scarborough

Likely George Hood and Maudlin Spencer?

Hood of Berwick is identified around Northumberland. One married Robertson and a Baptism said Mother was Hood, Native of Berwick (I'll update this at home later).

Nothing to help me in the Histories:-

"Published in the autumn of 1888 a bulky volume, written by Mr. Thomas Cockburn Hood."

The Coburn Family wrote a book.

Hi Claire

Unfortunately, the Tree I saw who has shared pictures from another, has few supporting documents.

They state the 1832 Roger Middleton Marriage to Ann, but twist the facts, to Ann Brignal.

But the F. S., B.T., Marriage image, now on F M P., clearly says Ann Brown.

Rodger Middleton's Twin children Rodger & Mary, Reg'n District "Newcastle upon Hyne" (reported to GRO as a District typo), are Mother M. S. Brown.

The Tree suggests Roger Middleton had a Pub at Ouseburn, before the Ship, South Shore, see earlier child baptisms, states abode Ouseburn, Victualler and I agree with that.

By 1841 Census, Roger Middleton, Publican, was at the So. Shore, Gateshead, with Ann and children.

Durham records online
Just done a Google search on John Hood shoemaker birth 1745 burial 1745

https://durhamrecordsonline.com/SearchResults.php

Search results------------------ Cost £1.50p find out more

Record Type   -  district year           -      Fore name -Surname    - Birth year     -    Abode
Burial            -  South Shields 1800   -       John         - Hood    -   1745          - Blue Quarries
                                                                                                                   (Gateshead Fell)
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello

I have a B.T. image of a John Hood 1800 burial, which you have transcribed before and kindly put a map of Heworth, when the B.T., was available on Family Search.

Hi Claire

Thanks for that possible Renwick connection, that was a good piece you spotted.

There is a John Renwick here at the William Woods marriage to Mary Hood in 1815 (in the Quote of my earlier piece).

But you may have spotted it already.

4 possible scenarios

If John Hood born 1745 died 1800 Shoemaker age 55 year and he was the father of George Hood baptised 1 Oct 1786 Gateshead - This 1786 George would have been 14 years old in 1800.
An age perfect for an apprenticeship after his dad died -He too young to take over the shoemaking business ? and John’s wife a widow left with no income and her death year.?

John hood X Mary Maxwell married 14th Nov 1767 Newcastle upon Tyne
or
John Hood X Mary Starling married 187u April 1779 Newcastle upon Tyne

Burial John Hood 1800 age 55 years  Abode Blue quarries
-------------------
The ship inn or pub to Blue quarries is some distance apart - both a Shoemaker and innkeeper are both individual time consuming jobs  to be the same John Hood.

If the Ship innkeeper John Hood was father of  George Hood 1786 Gateshead and he moved on to another pub or inn -Yorkshire  ? South Durham ?
----------------------
Now we have
1770 Duty Paid on Apprentices Register (attached) it says:-
Tho's Fawthorpe, Selby, Cooper, Jno Spencer.

George Hood could have learnt his trade and/or business skills from John Hood's Landlord, John Spencer, where John Hood lived 1790 to 1802.

---------------------
Last possible: with above cooper info - John Hood mariner from Selby with wife Jane was in port in Gateshead South shore docks 1786 which holds some substance as the were no more baptisms of John Hood in Gateshead parish register before or after 1786 and no record of a life after or burial of George Hood son of John - baptism 1st Oct 1786 Gateshead parish register

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello Claire

I think John Renwick at the 1815 Wm Woods & Hood, Newcastle marriage was the Master Mariner & Merchant, of Newcastle, who married Ann Scourfield at Gateshead in 1782 by Licence.

Also spelt Scurfield.

John RENWICK, esquire, of Newcastle upon Tyne in the county of Northumberland

Date of probate: 10 September 1835

(DPR/I/1/1835/R8/1-11)
Registered copy of will (DPR/I/2/46 p346-352)

Image 359, page number 346 to 352

This Will has been summarised quickly for some names and an idea of ages for family history purposes only. Most of the wording is missing and NOT a Legal Copy

Quay Sunderland, use of my Friend Matthew Plummer of Newc., John Rankin of Finsbury Circus, City of London, Merchant, Peragrine George Ellison of Newc., Gentleman that is to say Upon Trust for Mary Scurfield Ellison, (the daughter of Peragrine George Ellison and Mary his late Wife) and for her heirs. I can't read anymore, scanned last 2 images up & down it looks like we have the names.

Peregrine George Ellison mentioned here with others

A couple of vessels appear in adverts linked to Anthony Hood:-
the Astrea (1782) Mr John Renwick, Master. Anthony Hood and Lionel Robson, Newcastle and
the Rochester (1791) Anthony Hood, Newcastle.

Ropery of Stoddart and Hood, South Shore, June 1797
The Ropery of Stoddart and Hood, will in future be carried on under that of Anthony Hood and Co.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
