That Leeds Uni link could be useful (!)

With all these key Spencer connections to John Hood mariner burial 1819 Selby from Scarborough being family and landlords- it may take a while. (A Long while) to exhaust Selby.

Member comments are stored on Rootschat website to go back too, and so do not always needed answering on a thread.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello Dave and All

Regarding the title of the thread, it is likely that John Hood who was Publican of the Ship, South Shore, Gateshead, in the 1780s was also the Shoemaker, of Blue Quarries, aged 55 years, died 29th and buried 31st December 1800, at Haworth (in the Parish of Jarrow) and most likely to be the John Hood baptised at Gateshead in December 1745.

I have got a Map and South Shore stretches some distance South toward the boundary of Heworth.

Blue Quarries is shown.

It looks as though Barbara Bailey might have married three times.

Managed to get the Marriage witnesses earlier ...

1796, St Mary, Heworth, County Durham, 20th June
John Hood married Barbara Bailey both of this Chapelry, by Banns
Present (wits): Joseph Dale ; Andrew Kell

John Hood of Blue Quarries was buried at Heworth, end of 1800 (detail above).

1801 St Paul, Jarrow, County Durham, 15th November
Barbara Hood married Thomas Sharp both of this Parish, by Banns
Wits: George Jameson ; John Goodrick

1802 Gateshead, 14th April Burial
Thomas Sharp, of Blue Quarries, Mariner, 50 Years, died 12th April.

1806 Gateshead, County Durham, 14th July
Barbara Sharp married John Nelson, both of this Parish of Gateshead, by Banns (B.T. says Neilson)
Wits: Tho. Woodhouse ; Christ'r Brown

1824 Gateshead Burial
Barbara Nelson, Gateshead High Fell, 10th December, 68 years

Hi Mark,

That's  interesting, William Carr, publican 'Ship' Southshore 1790 , therefore the predecessor of the Ship John Hood  1787 trades directory Southshore Gateshead, either died, retired or moved on to another pub/inn? maybe in Yorkshire with George Hood baptised 1786. (with poor records it will remain a scenario though :( -  just as the single entry baptism of a child for a father John Hood [George son of John Hood]1786 Gateshead baptism - of a visiting! one of the two John Hood mariners of Scarborough theory)

(Highly probable scenario)

Any little connection whatsoever to John Hood of Selby or daughter Mrs Maudland Turner residing in Selby and George Hood born 1785-1787 before his appearance 1812 or Russell marriage 1815 would be enough to say George to some extent maybe connected that family. Its little! but - John Hood a mariner born 1737 Scarborough father was George: and aforesaid John Hood a mariner had tried for a son called George twice with his first wife Elizabeth Spencer/ Leppington/Hood who died 1775 Scarborough. and lastly they were the only Hood's residing in Selby those years. Then the landlord of John Hood land tax, John Spencer grocer, known  trained cooper and businessman. (Which as we all know George Hood born 1786 ish of Selby 1812 to 1845 thought was )

You'll never get absolute absolute proof or accuracy standards with the poor records pre 1837 or unless your really lucky with Wills/Probate, Headstone MI's. Deeds etc,

Having said all that! If anybody can find records - you can! as you have shown, many, many times. ;)

Hello Dave and All

John Hood, Publican of the Ship Public House or Inn, South Shore, Gateshead, had left the Pub by 1790 and possibly before the later takeover by A. Hood and might not be related, or not directly related.

Two Businesses
My 2x Great Grandfather (born Selby) of the Parish of Bowdon, Cheshire and then late of Leicester at his death, had an Office as a Leather Merchant at Leicester and also held the Licence to a Leicester Hotel in 1880 (Licensed Victualler on Family Birth Certificate) until the Licence was transferred from George Hood to Benjamin Babington Pead (newspaper Court Report of Transfers and Court Case of Unpaid Hotel Bill).

Second Job or Between Employment
However, Publican may have been a second job or a change from their usual trade, or work between jobs or employment, or even a place to live. Old Licences required a Licensee to live on the premises.

Pub a Place to Live and Sureties Required
The pub might be To Let and you could apply with your references at the Licensing Court (held between the annual Brewster / Licensing Session) of two local reputable people who knew you and who would both also put up a Surety according to old English Victuallers Registers seen.

1796 John Hood - Marriage Witnesses
Now I have some witness names to go at from the pay per view DRO site (no actual signatures), of John Hood's, either first (or his subsequent last) 1796 marriage:-

Witness 1 - Joseph Dale
Witness 2 - Andrew Kell

1786 8th February Newcastle upon Tyne - All Saints by Licence 7th February
Joseph Dale of the Parish of Jarrow in the County and Diocese of Durham, Mariner aged 22 and upwards and a Bachelor married Dorothy Pattison of the Chapelry of All Saints in the Town and County of Newcastle upon Tyne and Diocese aforesaid aged 24 and upwards and a Spinster.

Marriage Bondsman - Robert Buckham of the Parish of St John in the Town and County of Newcastle upon Tyne, Joiner and Cabinet Maker.

ADDED:
Information (above) from the Marriage Intention and Bond.

1785 St Paul, Jarrow, County Durham, 13th February
Andrew Kell married Elizabeth Elliot, both of this Parish by Banns
Witnesses: Thomas White ; Richard Kell.

John Hood's 1796 Marriage witnesses look really local in 1785 - 1786.

John Hood, Shoemaker of Blue Quarries, baptised Gateshead 1745 and buried in 1800 at nearby Heworth (in the Parish of Jarrow), aged 55 years (and probably the Publican) seems the likely the Father, John Hood on the 1786 Baptism, so far.

The recent John Hood and apparently Barbara Hood remarriage research, confirms two people they knew, John Hood and Barbara Hood (probably her remarriage) were Mariners.

 ----------

Then I thought of this again:-

1782, 16 November
 ; Mary, Hood, from Inverness ;

The vessel "Mary" is brought back from Inverness by [John] Hood (Arrival Shields).

1782, 9th November
To be Sold by Auction by Auction, on Tuesday 19 h November, ... at the House of Mr Ja. Graham, Sign of the Three Kings, Quayside, Newcastle.

... the MARY of Inverness, Mr John Hood, Master, now lying at Newcastle Quay, ...

The Captain will show the Vessel ; and further Particulars may be had by applying to Thomas Snaith, at the office of William Chapman, sen, in the Folly, Newcastle.

Inventories to be seen as above, and at Mr Thomas Wate's, North Shields.

Hi Mark

So if one of the two John Hood residents of Gateshead (or Southshore) was the father of George Hood baptised Oct 1786, that Gateshead George Hood b 1786 ish still could be your mystery George Hood appeared Selby 1812 with no paper trail of his early history. A shoemaker could be linked with cobber/cordwainer or tanner and obviously innkeeper/publican could be linked to brewing - cooper trades also the obvious question in mystery Selby George Hood was his reason to appear in Selby was to buy Richard Gibson bankrupt cooper business. We know R Gibson came from Newcastle upon Tyne.

(big Question)

Did the adult Gateshead baptised 1786 George Hood hear about Richard Gibson bankrupt stock through Gibson's Tyneside relations. ??? or a newspaper up there.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello Dave and All

Sorry, not very clear to me either, when I read it back!

What I should of said is ...

One witness at the 1796 John Hood = Barbara Bailey, marriage, was Joseph Dale and if he was the same Joseph Dale marrying in 1786, then his Marriage Bond / Intention says he lived in the Parish of Jarrow and was a Mariner.

If it was Barbara Hood (the Widow of John) that married Thomas Sharp, at St Paul, Jarrow, in 1801, and he was the Thomas Sharp buried in 1802 at Gateshead, then he was recorded as a Mariner when he died.

1802 Gateshead, 14th April Burial
Thomas Sharp, of Blue Quarries, Mariner, 50 Years, died 12th April.

1802 Burial Address: Thomas Sharp, Blue Quarries, so possibly still living in the same house or place that Barbara lived in when John Hood was buried 31st December 1800.

Barbara, probably the one buried Gateshead as Barbara Nelson in 1824.

Hi Mark,

Now this is bit of a curve ball 'Yorker' - Captain John Hood (of Selby ) on the river Tyne 4 years earlier than the George Hood son of John Hood baptism Oct 1786.

Did Captain John Hood have a lady friend there on Tyneside. - ?

That one off baptism --------
