Hello Dave and All
Regarding the title of the thread, it is likely that John Hood who was Publican of the Ship, South Shore, Gateshead, in the 1780s was also the Shoemaker, of Blue Quarries, aged 55 years, died 29th and buried 31st December 1800, at Haworth (in the Parish of Jarrow) and most likely to be the John Hood baptised at Gateshead in December 1745.
I have got a Map and South Shore stretches some distance South toward the boundary of Heworth.
Blue Quarries is shown.
It looks as though Barbara Bailey might have married three times.

Hello Dave and All
John Hood, Publican of the
Ship Public House or Inn, South Shore, Gateshead, had left the Pub by 1790 and possibly before the later takeover by A. Hood and might not be related, or not directly related.
Two BusinessesMy 2x Great Grandfather (born Selby) of the Parish of Bowdon, Cheshire and then late of Leicester at his death, had an Office as a Leather Merchant at Leicester and also held the Licence to a Leicester Hotel in 1880 (Licensed Victualler on Family Birth Certificate) until the Licence was transferred from George Hood to Benjamin Babington Pead (newspaper Court Report of Transfers and Court Case of Unpaid Hotel Bill).

Old Licences required a Licensee to live on the premises.
Pub a Place to Live and Sureties RequiredThe pub might be To Let and you could apply with your references at the Licensing Court (held between the annual Brewster / Licensing Session) of two local reputable people who knew you and who would both also put up a Surety according to old English Victuallers Registers seen.
1796 John Hood - Marriage WitnessesNow I have some witness names to go at from the pay per view DRO site (no actual signatures), of John Hood's, either first (or his subsequent last) 1796 marriage:-
Witness 1 - Joseph Dale
Witness 2 - Andrew Kell
1786 8th February Newcastle upon Tyne - All Saints by Licence 7th FebruaryJoseph Dale of the Parish of Jarrow in the County and Diocese of Durham,
Mariner aged 22 and upwards and a Bachelor married Dorothy Pattison of the Chapelry of All Saints in the Town and County of Newcastle upon Tyne and Diocese aforesaid aged 24 and upwards and a Spinster.
Marriage Bondsman - Robert Buckham of the Parish of St John in the Town and County of Newcastle upon Tyne, Joiner and Cabinet Maker.
ADDED:
Information (above) from the Marriage Intention and Bond.
1785 St Paul, Jarrow, County Durham, 13th February Andrew Kell married Elizabeth Elliot, both of this Parish by Banns
Witnesses: Thomas White ; Richard Kell.
John Hood's 1796 Marriage witnesses look really local in 1785 - 1786.
John Hood, Shoemaker of Blue Quarries, baptised Gateshead 1745 and buried in 1800 at nearby Heworth (in the Parish of Jarrow), aged 55 years (and probably the Publican) seems the likely the Father, John Hood on the 1786 Baptism, so far.
