Does anyone know of Holly Hall, 1700's, in Rotherham??
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 18:44 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I've just found the baptism of my 6x great grandmother CATHERINE VINTON/VINTIN at ROTHERHAM on 16 AUG 1766, daughter of WILLIAM of HOLLY HALL.

All the other entries on the page are people from the Rotherham/Masbrough/Brinsworth area, but it doesn't specify where Holly Hall is - is it an area or an actual hall?
If anyone knows anything about the place I'd be very grateful to know - I don't know the occupation of William Vintin/Vinton either so if it is a hall then I don't know if he worked at the place or even owned it (owning a hall would be a rarity for my family just to add!).

Many thanks for any help,
Holly

Added: I haven't currently found any siblings for Catherine that I can be sure of, but two baptisms have appeared - William Vintin (son of William, a farmer, baptized 15 Jun 1763 at Tankersley) and Thomas Vintin (son of William, a farmer, baptized 23 Jan 1764 at Wortley).

Hi Frank,

After a quick search I did find the Holly Hall in Worcestershire - makes me wonder why the curate hadn't been more precise on where the abode was. It seems the most likely candidate until I find any Holly Halls in Yorkshire.

Thank you,
Holly

Just had a quick search for Vintin/Vinton's in Worcestershire - no baptisms at all for the period 1746-1786 (20 years either side of Catherine's birth).

Added: Just found Sarah Vintin's burial (21 Sep 1766 - the year Catherine was born) at Rotherham (Sarah was the mother of Catherine). She is said to be the wife of William Vintin of Holly Hall once again.

Hi all,
Holly Hall is a large, beautiful old farmhouse on the edge of Greenmoor, near Wortley, in the area known as Hunshelf, South Yorkshire. I am descended from Elizabeth Vintin baptised at Wortley St Leonard on 25 March 1715, daughter of William Vintin, Forgeman of Wortley Forge, in the parish of Tankersley.

Catherine Vintin was Elizabeth's niece, daughter of William (christened at Wortley 13 Oct 1728), who was one of Elizabeth's siblings, and his wife Sarah Gillott. Sarah came from Rotherham and children are quite often baptised where the parents were married or raised - although Catherine's brothers William & Thomas were both christened at Wortley, a chapelry in the parish of Tankersley.

William 1728-94 was son of William Vintin & his wife Ellen, born at Attercliffe Forge, Sheffield, and baptised at Sheffield St Peter's Parish church (now the cathedral) on 7 Mar 1695.

The Vintins were Huguenots who first appeared in South Yorkshire (Rotherham) in 1612. They came from France as iron workers.

I have photos of Holly Hall and other relevant places in the area and quite a lot of information on the Vintins if you'd like more info.

Hi Claribelle,

I think that reply has just made my day! I was just saying to my father last night that I could probably go back in my family along all routes to the 1600s and not find one person from outside england, Wales or Ireland - so I'm very glad that it seems not to be the case!

I would love to see the photos of Holly Hall (does it still stand?) and information on the Vintin's that you have. Would it be easier if I sent my email address in a message to you?

Thank you very much,
Holly

Hi Holly
Are you on Ancestry.co.uk? My tree is on there - it's private, but I could send you an invitation to see it if you're a subscriber. If not, then send me your email address & I'll send you some photos & more info.

Holly Hall is still standing and occupied, but I'm sure it's much altered. It's really lovely!

Claire
