Captain William Scott 1767 and brother Charles Scott 1777 Royal Navy.
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 06:48 BST (UK) »
Hi.  I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where I might find out a little more about the brothers of my ancestor, James Scott born 1774 Portsea, Hampshire.  I know that William Scott b1767 Portsea, Hampshire was a Midshipman of the Royal Navy and his brother Captain Charles Scott b1777 Portsea, Hampshire was also a Midshipman of the Royal Navy and he is said to have been drowned 'at sea' in a shipwreck.  I'm interested to know if these two brothers, and possibly my ancestor James (was he also in the Navy?), were involved in any major battles of the time. The parents of these three brothers were William Scott b1737 and his wife Elizabeth Matthews.  Elizabeth Matthews was the daughter of the Reverend James Matthews of Rye, Isle of Wight and his wife Elizabeth Croucher.  My ancestor, James Scott b1774 married Sophia Button in 1792 at North Hayling, Hampshire, and he is listed on the marriage certificate of his son as a 'ship owner and builder'  Any help would be great! Thankyou!

Do you have any dates for when these gentlemen died?  For example, did William senior leave a will which might provide some clues about his sons?

Hi Nell. Thanks for your interest.  Sorry to say that I don't have any death dates for Captain William 1767 or Captain Charles Scott 1777.  With very common names, finding deaths through the usual search engines is nearly impossible, and being men of the sea, they may well have died elsewhere in the world.  I do know that my James Scott 1774 lived to the ripe age of 91 years, and I have a copy of his Senior Master Mariners Certificate dated 1851.
I have found mention of a William Scott being a Prisoner of War in France, but it could be anyone.
William Scott Snr 1737, the father of these three men, died in 1807 at West Looe, Cornwall.  I would love to track down his will if he had one...do you know where I could look Nell? (I'm in Australia) I know that records become quite rare this far back in time.  Many thanks Nell. Nell

Yes, he left a will, available to download from either TNA (cost £3.45) or at Ancestry if you have a subscription.  TNA reference is PROB 11/1458/56 (link http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D313254 )

Hi Nell.  Many thanks for your help.  I've found William Scott 1737's will which mentions only his son James 1774 and his sister Elizabeth Mary 1781, and with the will being dated 1807 (the year of William 1737's death), it seems that Captains William 1767 and Charles 1777 Scott are already deceased. At least I have a time-frame to work with!  Thanks Nell!

I'm looking at Commissioned Sea Officers of the Royal Navy 1660 to 1815. I've found a William Scott made lieutenant 21 August 1798. Drowned August 1805. I can't find a Charles I'm afraid. Forgive grammar I'm in the library using my phone.

Hi,

I am also in Australia an am a descendant of William Edward Scott who was a master mariner. I do know a lot about him, but the problem is that he may be one of two people, and you might be able to solve the mystery.

If I look at the names of William's children, then there is a very strong resemblance with the names of children of your ancestor, James Scott. The names Eliza Sophia, Amelia Ann, Elizabeth Mary and William appear in both family trees.

However, if we subtract his age from the date of his death, then my ancestor was born on 28 Jan 1765, but there is no proof, only one wrong assumption. If you have proof that the brother of your ancestor was born in 1767, then I know that I am on the wrong road. Have you come across records that indicate that William was indeed born in 1767? Was this just an assumption? His parents, William and Elizabeth Matthews were married on 16 Sept 1763, and it is therefore possible that their first child could have been born in 1765 or 1767 according to your information. I need to translate all my research from Afrikaans and will do so once I know that we are indeed talking about the same William Scott.

Having read all the correspondence, I may just mention that here is a good reason why William did not inherit anything. William was captain of a number of ships and was an expert master mariner who sometimes had to pass new ships as being seaworthy. He sailed between South Africa, Mauritius and England between 1797and 1821 and died in Cape Town in 1847.

Kind regards

Johan
