Waterbeach Mill, Cambridge Road.
« on: Tuesday 16 August 16 17:05 BST (UK) »
An ancestor was the Miller living at Waterbeach Mill in 1911. Does anyone know if it is still there, and maybe someone has a photograph of it.
Regards.

The mills seem to have been disused when this map was made

Slap up has become Bollywood spice and there's a new access road now from A10 - Car Dyke Road. I was there last Saturday at event at  Tillage hall (not typo - actually called tillage!) in Cambridge rd - no sign of a mill

Thanks everyone. I don't think it was a Windmill as I believe it was on the river, so probably some sort of Watermill.
regards.

If your ancestor's address in 1911 was definitely in Cambridge Road, then only the middle section of the road seems to be near any waterway - Car Dyke known locally as the old Tillage. This was part of a long canal system dating back to Roman times and I think only used for transport ( and probably drainage). I wouldn't think there would be enough water to power a water mill.
I can't see any water- mills on the Cam near Waterbeach / Clayhythe either, but they may not be marked like windmills are.

Just had another look at the 1911 census, and it says the address was The Mill Cottage, Cambridge Road, Waterbeach. He was a Roller Flour Milller living with his wife and three children. So I guess it was close to the Mill rather than in it, but it sounds as if it is long gone now.

Waterbeach Mill Cottage Info

Hi,

By chance I came across your question online.  I hope this manages to reach you.  Mill Cottage is still there.  It belongs to friend's of ours who have lived there for 20years now.  If you'd like to email me I can connect you to them.  They are currently facing a potential huge development threat and might be interested to link more history to the cottage to support their fight to preserve it.
