1861 Census Lookup, Please
« on: Friday 22 July 05 23:55 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

At the moment, I am sat here with my tee shirt loosely wrapped on my head, resembling a female version of Lawrence of Arabia. If such a thing could ever exist. The night is hot, and some ancestors have been making it difficult for me all day.

LOL Excuse the madness.

I'm wondering if someone could help me find my dear great great grandfather John Tollerfield. He was born about 1824, but in 1881 he is down as being born in 1828, so the birth year is anywhere between those years. He was born in Knowle, Dorset.

I think that he may be in Hampshire because in 1871 his place of birth was down as Hampshire, although this is incorrect as it was Dorset, so I'm hoping that he was in Hampshire in 1861.

The surname has many different variations including Tollofield, Tollyfield, Tallerfield, Tallofield, Tolefield, Tollifield, and many more.

If anyone could help me find this man I would be very grateful :).

Thank you all for reading.

Best wishes,
Sgt Tollers

Hello Allan,

That guy is too old to be the guy that I'm looking for unfortunately. My great great grandfather was born 1824 - 28 in Dorset.

His name in 1871 is written as Tallerfield, so I imagine that his name would be written as either Tallerfield, Tallofield, Tallifield, Tallyfield. He must have had the strangest accent!

Best wishes,

Hello Allan,

This looks more plausible. Having put himself down as coming from Hampshire 10 years later in the census, I can honestly say that this is probably him. And he had another child! Oh my!

Thank you very much for your help on this. I am very grateful to you :).

Best wishes,

If anyone has got stuck and spent numerous hours trying to find the name 'Tollerfield' on the census as I have been, then this might help you.

I have found that it has sometimes been listed as Totterfield, Sotterfield or even Sollerfield, but when you look at the actual census you can tell it is Tollerfield.

Hope this is of some use to someone.
