Death Certificate-Portugal
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 15:36 BST (UK) »
My 3rd grandfather died in 1902 in Coimbra Portugal and was buried at St James Church Oporto.

Were death certificates issued in those days and if so where would one obtain a copy from.

Hi Kevin

Why was your 3rd grandfather in Portugal?

was he a resident? was he working? was he Englsh?

If he was English, his death might have been reported to the Consulate in which case there might be an entry here

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/british-nationals-died-overseas-1818-2005

If there is an entry there, you can apply to the GRO at Southport for a copy.

There's more information here

https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Portugal_Civil_Registration

and a link to their transcribed records

https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Portugal_Deaths_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records)

you can search here

Family Search was suggested in 2010- did you ever try to check those Portuguese records?

He went out to Portugal, had several children born there and registered at British Chaplaincy ,Oporto.
Returned to England, wife died, remarried, had a son who died. After that does not appear on a census return. Found from St James Church Oporto was buried there after dying in Coimbra.

I believe he went out with new wife and daughters and I have a strong suspicion that daughters and maybe a son may have married in Portugal. Last known entry can find is death of son to second wife 1854 in Leeds  and youngest son from first marriage in 1856 and then nothing till 1902 death in Portugal. It is a large time span to cover and no knowledge where he was.

One of his sons went there also and had family, but they all returned

Regarding my 3rd grandfather Not on find my past or family search.

Inquiry was to find out if death certificates were issued for that period

Thanks for information, will try and pursue through contact in Portugal

The orginal thread did mention that Family Search has "Portugal Deaths 1640 -1910."

This page shows the coverage of the vital records they have-
https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Portugal_Deaths_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records)

Might also be something here- http://www.cyndislist.com/portugal/records/
