1841 lookup Hanmer please
« on: Friday 22 July 05 18:49 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Not sure if Hanmer comes under Flintshire or Cheshire - so apologies if I'm on the wrong board!

Looking for Ann Butler c1821 born in Hanmer, hopefully still living there with her family. She married John Medcalf in 1842 and moved to Shocklach. Would like to trace her parents and siblings if possible.

Thank you!

Sue :)

Hi Sue,
You do have the right board Hanmer is in Flintshire.
I'll try and have a look at the 1841 census for you this week.
Do you have Ann & John's Marriage Certificate? if not I can also have a look for that. It is on North Wales bmd Hanmer St Chad C53/01/26.

Paul.

Thanks for your time

Hi Sue,
Sorry, I could not see Ann Butler on the Hanmer 1841 Census.

Two Hanmer Registers were lost in a fire in 1889.
Burials 1784-1813 & Marriages 1787-1813.
Burial Reg 1856-84 & Marriages 1837-88 have also disappeared so I could not see Ann's Marriage Cert.
I had a look for her Baptism in 1821 the only one I could find is
May 20 1821 Hannah D/O John & Elizabeth Butler. Abode Bronnington. occ Labourer. Do you think this could be her?
If you do I could have a look for Hannah Butler in Bronnington next time I go to the Archives.

Paul.

Thanks Paul

She's not making it easy is she! I checked out the map and Bronington is pretty close to Hanmer so it is feasible that the Hannah you found could be her. If it isn't too much trouble it would be great if you could look for her.

Thanks very much.

Hi again Paul

Have just received Ann Butler marriage certificate this morning -to be honest I had forgotten I had sent off for it! Her father's name is John which while it doesn't confirm its Hannah at least it doesn't rule her out - his occupation is labourer. One of the witnesses however is called Hannah Butler just to confuse matters. At the time of her marriage in December 1842 Ann is a servant so the chances are she may not be living with her parents. Her place of residence is listed as Willington - I have no idea where that is does it ring any bells with you??

Thanks again for your help

Hi Sue,
Had another look on the 1841 census I could not see a Butler Family in Hanmer or Bronnington. The only Butler Family's I could find lived in Bettisfield.
Richard Butler. 60. Farmer.
Thomas Butler. 25. Shoemaker.
Frances Butler. 20.
Maria Butler. 15.
William Deakin. 15. J Shoemaker.

James Butler. 30. Tailor.
Sarah Butler. 30.
Isaac Butler. 7.
Johnson Butler. 7.
Jemima Butler. 8 mon.

Benjamin Deakin. 15. App Shoemaker.
Thomas Stokes. 14. App Shoemaker.
Eliza Butler. 26. (looked like) Staymaker
Ann Butler. 3 mon.

Typed Willington in Google and it came up with Willington Derbyshire.

If you need anything else in Hanmer let me know.

Paul.

Hello Paul

I have made a little progress in my hunt for Ann Butler. I have got hold of a transcription of the Hanmer baptisms 1813 -1836 and in there is an Anne Butler born 24/5/1818 father John Butler (labourer) and mother Elizabeth.

Willington I have discovered is or was a township within the Parish of Hanmer so in theory she should be in the area on the 1841 census. I don't know if that's an area you would be able to look at??

Possible siblings are Elizabeth (1814) Mary (1815) Martha (1828) John (1811) and Thomas (1813) - though some of these may be children of a different John and Elizabeth.

Her future husband John Medcalf/Metcalf could also be living in the area  in 1841 as well.

Thanks for all your help

Hi,
Just read your request.
I have found an Ann Butler  aged 25 at Hanmer included in household of Lord Kenyon, Gredington Park. I only have transcription so have no place of birth or occupation. I can look this  up next time I go to the archives.
(Incidentally the Joseph & Benjamin Deakin mentioned previously were brothers to my husbands 2x great grandmother)
