If the birthdate on the 1939 register is correct, then Thomas' birth should have been registered in the Dec qtr of 1876 - doesn't appear to be obviously there though.

Also, he is noted as working for Durham CC on the 1939 register - have you checked with Durham CC to see if they hold their employment records in the archive?

I would interpret Roadman as working on the roads.  I was wondering whether the signal man profession of his father indicated working on railway.  There was a J W Hoggart working for Midland railway at various stations between c. 1890 and 1909, but I can't conclusively find this person on the corresponding censuses  ::)

Thank you can i ask how i can find more on the man you mentioned working on the railway because the family has always believed one of there ancestors worked on the railway

There is a database on Ancestry for railway employment records.  I don't know to what extent it is complete though.
