John Bashford & Janet (Alexander) Bashford
« on: Saturday 16 July 16 23:13 BST (UK) »
I believe this picrture is of my great-grandparents.

John was born in 1833 and died in 1869.

Janet was born in 1837 & died in 1876.

They were both born and died in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.

Do the clothing styles fit with a picture which had to be taken before 1869?

Thank you for any help you can give on dating this photograph.

Bob Bashford

Welcome to Rootschat, Bob.   Hope we can be helpful in the time ahead.   (I see you've actually been around this site for many years  -  but not posting)

Clothing, hair and photography definitely not right for a photo taken before 1869 - so back to the research for someone else it could be.   Bother.   :(

Thanks ... I was doubtful about the identification on this.

Do you have a 'best guess' as to date?

Only guesses you understand, but the property appears to be a typical Victorian(turn of the century) villa type semi with the 'off shot' kitchen. The room behind the gents head would later, typically become the bathroom, but as there does not appear to be any waste pipe, I guess this has not been converted yet.To afford a house like this (if indeed it is theirs), he may have been a middle management type fellow or an engineer of some description. Very unlikely 'shop-floor'.

It is obviously a family snap, probably a Box Brownie type and not a pro camera so again this would be post 1900. So my best guess would be sometime between then and shortly after ww1.

Hi Bob,

If you go back to your original post and add 'Dating please' to the title, those who are good at dating will see it and come in.

 - I can't tell, but sometime in the 20th century  possibly 1920s maybe?

Couple in Scotland ... Dating, please ...
« Reply #5 on: Wednesday 20 July 16 21:26 BST (UK) »
My second try at this ... without any assumptions other than that this is a photo of a couple taken in Scotland ... what is your estimate of a date?

Thanks

The lady is wearing an outfit very much like the one my Gran Sarah has on in her passport photo.  That was 1920s, so round about that time, I would say.
