Hi, Possibly two of my relations went into a childrens home in Birmingham or Manchester in late 1891, could anyone suggest the best way I could find any more information about this.

Proper child care was still in it's infancy at this time.
In B'ham the most well known orphanage was that of Josiah Mason.
There were also industrial schools, although not exclusive to orphans many found themselves there as well as in the workhouse (Western Rd.)
The Catholic Church also had orphanages usually separating girls from boys.
Children often found themselves farmed out to other families who were paid to take care of them & could end up anywhere.
Wherever they were they should appear on the 1901 census assuming they were long term.

Hi, My Grandfather was an "inmate" of Marston Green Cottage Homes 1899-1905. he was born 1887 and orphaned in 1899 with the death of his mother in the workhouse infirmary. He had had little education until that time having poor eye sight. He had spent most of his days wandering the streets of Aston. Going into the Home gave him food and clean clothing and regular schooling. He was eventually discharged ( with a new set of clothes and a Bible)to a dairy farmer who set him up with a milk round. He said  entering the Home was the best thing that happened to him.His sister also went into the same home entering at 7 and "adopted" out at age 11 They had very little contact in the Home and never met once she left,
My Aunt had permission to search through the entry book and punishment book of the Home but had to provide proof of her relationship  the entry information was very brief and at least he did not appear in the punishment book
