It might be worth getting Mary Ann's death certificate as the informant could give you a clue. As you say, a bit of a coincidence if there is no relationship, given she was living in the same place and with a fairly unusual surname.

I had just come to that conclusion myself - I'll let you know in due course. I'm wondering if JK's second wife died (no record of that, yet) and he remarried a Mary Ann ...

As you say, living in the same house (if you look on Google street view, there's only one Victorian cottage in Eliot Bank), and then being buried in the same cemetery ... a bit of a coincidence!

Thanks for your help,

Sid

I have been looking at Giles Knighton  born circa 1785, he had a daughter born about 1816, it is possible this could be the Mary Ann you are looking for, could she be a sister to John or an aunt
Just a thought

Isn't that the one I gave the links to earlier in the 1841 census where she is shown with a brother, John? The problem is that according to his marriage certificate he says his father was William.

Yes Groom although I am not entirely convinced, Giles died in 1865

I looked at 1861 with Giles and family, there are some familiar names with  earlier baptisms and
census

I wonder where John's wife Ann is buried?

I have no idea even when she died ...

Could this be her baptism (father on the marriage was James Hart)
Ann Sarah Hart
bap 8 May 1814, St Luke Chelsea
parents James + Mary Ann
born 23 Dec 1813

Were John and Ann already together in Chelsea in 1841?
Mary Ann Knighton was 56 years old on her death in 1870. Which is a match on age for the Ann Sarah Hart from Chelsea.
Could Ann Sarah and Mary Ann be the same person? Perhaps some monumental piece of misinformation from someone giving the info?

That is John K's second wife - and yes, they were together in 1841 (John William Knighton was born in 1840).

But she is Anne in the 1851 census and Anne Sarah in 1861, and on her marriage certificate ... having said which, this family does have a tendency to change their names quite a lot.

I've ordered her death certificate ... which may (or may not) help.

Hi Sid
Let us know how you get on with the cert, should reveal something, pity they changed their names to suit the occasion

Happy hunting
