Maritime Records for William Reid Young Chief Engineer RMS Douro?
« on: Tuesday 05 July 16 00:10 BST (UK) »
I know that William Reid Young died in the Wreck of the Douro in 1882. I've found lots of records pertaining to the man and his family. I know he was born in Aberdeen in 1832, I know who he married and that they had their home in Southampton.
I am not by any means certain that I am a relative, but I think finding the records of his time at sea may help me determine that. Any suggestions on where to begin?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

No central personal records of seafarers were kept between 1857 and 1913 so researching seamen in that time scale is never easy.
Do you have a certificate number for him?

1881 Crew agreements are on line but are by no means complete. You may be able to get hold of his certificate number from the C/A. I think there are 78 references to William Young, could find no reference for William Reid Young.

I don't know if you have seen this page http://www.plimsoll.org/resources/SCCLibraries/WreckReports/14823.asp

All we know about him for definite that he was lost with DOURO in 1882.
Crew Agreements for the vessel DOURO official number 52721 are only available from the National Archive for the years 1872 and 1874.
Her last 1882 crew agreement is stored at the Maritime History Archive in Newfoundland. Her previous crew agreements 1866-1881 are stored at Southampton Archives with the exception of 1875 which is at NMM Greenwich. I understand some of DOURO's Crew agreements (which ones I do not know) are available on line from "CLIP" but as the site is down at the minute, I cannot check. Best wait for "CLIP" to come on line.
Searching crew agreements to find his maritime records can be a long and costly exercise if we can find his certificate of service which should be at TNA this should tell us what ships he sailed on with dates of engagement and discharge.  I don't know if Engineers certificates are available on line.
