More on the marriage

27 Dec 1873 Leeds, St Peter
Samuel Crowther, 24, cloth manufacturer of Pudsey
Father -    John Crowther,  cloth manufacturer

Helena Widdop, 20 of Briggate
Father -    Jeremiah Widdop, commercial traveller

i can find Samuel in Pudsey, born Horsforth, up to 1871, but he;s a mystery after that!

If he was taken into care at an early age, he may not remember his mother's name correctly, he's told it incorrectly by the Guardians, he's given the wrong info on the certificate

I wonder - can you find his brother Thomas J Crowther b c1880 in Canada - that might help

samuel crowther of Pudsey seems possibly a bit of a slippery character. He's before the courts in 1872 on a posisble charge of forgery - I can't find the result but guess he wasn;t convicted as even in that newspaper report there was discussion on whether the case was strong enough to proceed. Then in 1875 he claims not to be bankrupt when a debtor tries to collect his money, and is charged with perjury as he is later believed not to have the money claimed

suspect he may have left his wife and family and she couldn't bring them up.
