PROV inquest file
« on: Friday 24 June 16 01:47 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if there is a way to see if PROV hold an inquest file from 1900.  I'm in Brisbane so can't go to the records office and I know they don't actually do lookups but is there anyway online I can confirm there is a file?

Thanks
Mel.

You can't.

Perhaps if you could post a name we could help you.  There is a resource Index to Inquests in Vic to 1985 which a number of us own.

This link will help you also.

The deposition files are digitised on PROV.  I don't know if it is all of them but you can't search by name, you have to search for the inquest number within the series.

Go here:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09q3/

In the VPRS box put the number 24

In the 'any words' box put the reference number which should be 1900/......

Search

Click on the link VPRS 24/P0000/..... then 'view record'

Sorry for the delayed reply . Am looking for Michael Duane inquest held 25 Oct 1900 I think.

Wow, didn't realise the actual files were online. I clicked on the link you posted Debra. I'll just work my way through all the individual items and fingers crossed I come across the one I need

Thanks so much

Thanks Cando

I did have the newspaper article , but was hoping to get the inquest file as well just out of curiosity. I've looked on the link Debra has given and looks like they have only digitised up until July 1900.  So if you couldn't find anything on the index inquest would that mean there is no inquest file.

The surname has been mistranscribed on the Index.   The enquiry was held at Footscray Court.

From PROV.

Project: Digitising Inquests (1840-1925 and 1926-1937)
Especially popular with genealogists and medical researchers this project also builds on the 1840-1925 records which have already been digitised.
Index to be published 2016.
1840-1925: Imaging 100% | Publishing 64%;
1926-1937: Imaging 100% | Publishing 0%

Project: Indexing Inquest Deposition Files
Inquest records from 1840 to 1937 are being indexed and digitised for online availability. They’re among the most popular records in the Victorian archives. Indexing 100% | Checking index 97% | Est. completion date 2016.

I've just checked 8 names  of those I know had inquests and are on the Index CD and prior to 1925 and not one has been digitised.  Just a matter of time I guess.

So others aren't misled.  You cannot search by name on the web.  Once the Index is online then you will be able to find the file number.

Fantastic thanks for that info. I"ll just keep checking back every couple of months. The order in the link Debra put was pretty much date order so hopefully even without a name search option it should be easy enough to find.

I thought I'd have to pay a researcher to physically get a copy so that's fantastic it will eventually be online.
