Allied P.O.Ws in Germany WW2
« on: Wednesday 22 June 16 05:07 BST (UK) »
My father was an Australian Soldier captured on Crete in June 1941 and interred in German P.O.W. Camps. He was repatriated to England in April 1945 before being sent home to Australia in June 1945.
I understand that the P.O.W.s were questioned as to their treatment etc. In England.
I paid the U.K. National Archives to have WO 344/21/2 set of records searched, but they said they found nothing. Was I looking at the right set of records?
He was mentioned in dispatches, for several escape attempts, and I was able to download the record of what he actually did, which was digitised, from the National Archives, WO 373/102/752. That record is not in Australia.
Can anyone help with regards to what records am I actually looking for?

Regards
Lorayne

Hi

Although returning POWs were asked to fill in a general questionnaire for British/American ex-prisoners of war I understand that not all may have done so.  Your look up reference looks to be correct.  I have my fathers questionnaire which was filed under WO 344/249/2.  As an Australian this may not have applied to your father.  I also don't know how long after his return my father filled his in, it isn't dated.  It could be that your father was repatriated to Australia before he could complete his, although I would guess that if these were done it was pretty soon after repatriation before memory faded.

Reference my last post I have now found the date on my fathers questionnaire and he completed it within a week of his return so you can ignore my speculation about not having time.  It may just be that Australian and other commonwealth troops were not required to complete these.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I am in Australia, so cannot get there personally to ask anyone.

I can't speak for WW2 but when searching for an Australian airman who had been taken prisoner in WW1 I found both letters concerning his incarceration and treatment along with mention of a prisoner of war account in Australian sources.

I'll see if I can identify the exact source in both cases.

You'll probably have done so already but you may want to try this as a start:

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/search/

one source was the Australian War Memorial: https://www.awm.gov.au/

Dear S.L.
I have contacted the Australian War Memorial Re. My father's Questionnaire.
They are called Statement made by Repatriated Servicemen.
I found one in a returned P.O.W.'s army record which had been digitised. so they are in Australia.
My father was in Germany.
There are a lot of what you are referring to who were prisoners of the Japenese digitised on the National Archive site.
So hoping the War Memorial research people can help me.

Thank you very much for your reply
