James Bray
« on: Tuesday 21 June 16 05:45 BST (UK) »
Greatx4 grandfather, James Bray, died 1848 Hartpury aged 86.  He married Mary Saunders in 1783 at Swindon.  Most online trees show that he was born 1763 in Altarnum, Cornwall to Nicholas Bray and Elizabeth Williams.  I have doubts about whether that was his place of birth and those were his parents, as the 1841 census has him living in Hartpury, widower, with his daughter Margaret Wood (nee Bray) and grandchildren, showing "Y" to whether born in same county.

Also, given that his supposed father and grandfather's names were Nicholas, he hasn't named any of his 4 sons after them. From the information I have, none of his other supposed numerous siblings or parents moved to Gloucestershire, so am also wondering why he would have done that.   The GRO death certificate is too early to show date and place of his birth.

His children were: Mary B1786, Nancy B1789, Sarah B1791, James B1793, Elizabeth B & D1796, Joseph Saunders B1798, Elizabeth B1800, Thomas B1801, Joseph B & D1806, Margaret B1808.  All born in Hartpury.

Any help in proving or dispelling his birth place and parents would be appreciated.  Many thanks.

I am here today because my ancestors dared to take a risk and travel half way round the world to start a new life, two as 15 year old boys without their families

His marriage record has his name as James Bray Jun? of this parish, signed with a mark, one of the witnesses is James Bray Sen? who also signed with a mark. So doubtful that his father is Nicholas of Cornwall.
Ignore that, wrong James Bray - married Elizabeth Branscombe!

Have been looking at the Forest of Dean Family History records ....

As these records can sometimes be hard to transcribe etc. or there is an Alias in this surname:

i.e. Longdon - 5 August 1799 - Charlotte - daughter of William & Mary BRAY als BROUGH which pronounced sounds like BRAW !!!  in  West Country accent....

Fod Records: William BRAY of Eldersfield married Mary CURTIS of Longdon - 22 July 1793

_____________

I think this may be of use - although more work needs to be done

Hartpury

Baptisms

BRAW

1744 - Richard - son of Richard & Sarah
1751 - Mary - daughter of Rich(ar)d & Sarah
1754 - Anne - daughter of Rich(ar)d & Sarah
1758 - Elizabeth - daughter of Richard & Sarah
28 February 1762 - James - son of Rich(ar)d & Sarah
1765 - Sarah - daughter of Rich(ar)d & Sarah

There are various burials at Hartpury

9 September 1785 - Richard BRAY
17 April 1780 - Sarah BORY -

--

Also on the Forest of Dean records which makes me think I'm on the right track....

Baptism  at Hartpury - 8 April 1776 of Charles BRAW - parents Will(ia)m and Martha

and then the burial - 9 July 1777 of Charles BRAY - son of William & Martha BRAY (Martha BRAY buried at Hartpury - 4 May 1789)

On the Forest of Dean records:

Marriage at Maisemore - 16 December 1767

William BRAW of this parish and Martha POOL of this Parish

mark of Thomas ARBOTH and Richard BRAW

---

On the Forest of Dean records for Hartpury - there are some 'earlier' DAW transcriptions - which may possibly belong to the BRAW - etc.

---

Forest of Dean : Marriage Allegations - a number of BRAY's inc

14 November 1728

William BRAY Widower residence: Uley
Margret MERRETT - Spinster, Standish
By Licence:
Witness 1: Jeremiah ROBINS als BUTCHER - Churchwarden of the Parish of Standish
Marriage Allegation
Sworn before B NEWTON

Transcriber's Notes: The Groom is BRAY als BROUGH

---

Richard BRAY married Esther PHILLIPS at Rudford 27 October 1778

However, their children Elizabeth and Sarah were christened BRAW at Bulley - 1780 and 1782

Thank you for that Capetown.  It certainly  has given me food for thought.  Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a marriage record for Richard and Sarah
