In the future, please tell us everything you have already found so we don't waste our time going over the same ground.

You can order a passport application for a fee.  According to this, it would be available to you, as he was born over 100 years ago - https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/United_States_Passports#Availablity_of_Passports.2C_April_1925_to_Present

The life claim in the Social Security application database means he applied for retirement or disability benefits then.  If I remember correctly, the later date that shows what the name was listed as was just due to the Social Security Administration going through their past records in an audit and doesn't really mean anything about your man.

1935 passenger lists gives John Murray as married- have you tried searching for his wife at the Brooklyn address in 1940?

Another question, if I may !
If John was born in USA and the travelled back to Scotland a couple of years later in 1894 would he have to have had a passport ? .. Also back 1887 when his parents and siblings actually travelled to and fro would they have required passports ?
Another thing that I'm curious about.. On the 1911 census it has 12 children born 9 living.. There is approx a 2 year gap between each birth except for the time the family were in the USA.. Would/could there have been more children born and died while overseas?
Thanks in advance
Karen

Passports were uncommon until after World War I so it's unlikely the family had passports issued.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Karen don't think that record fits in 1892 as this looks like the family in the 1891 census address 4,Duff Street Greenock
Donald Murray age 30 b Stornoway  occupation carpenter
Catherine Murray age 25 b Greenock
Alexander Murray age 6 b Greenock
Malcolm Murray age 4 b Greenock
John Murray age 2 b America
Not having much luck finding them coming back to the UK ?

You might be better looking for more births on Scotlands People for this couple there is a tree for this couple with a Roderick Alexander McIver Murray b 1905 died 1907 ....but no mention of a John Murray ...Did the mother Catherine Murray die 1911 ?

Rosie, now you bring it to my attention I agree the 1892 return record could not be.. As it is my family in the 1891 Scottish census. I have not found where the father Donald (birth name Daniel Lewis Murray ) actually went to the USA and like you have not found their return pre 1891.

Yes Catherine did die 1911

After the birth of John was my grandfather
Donald in Scotland 1894,
followed by Agnes Morrison Murray 1896,
Ms Stewart Murray 1899,
Robert  Murray 1901
Catherine McIver Murray 1903
Roderick McIver Murray 1905 - 1907
Roderick McIver Murray 1908
I will check SP again as I still have to find 3 more births according to the 1911 census there was 12 born 9 living... There is a gap between John 1888 & Donald 1894 where there could be a possibility.
