Surname HILL/Masterton NI/1925ish
« on: Wednesday 15 June 16 23:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for some evidence of a HILL family living in Masterton/TeOreOre around the time of 1925 onwards.  There is some anectodal evidence he was a gardener or similar, and died about 1946-7. Any help appreciated.
Rallenza.

Hello...

From a family historian's point of view, here is the extremely informative probate file for Annie Maria HILL

Less so, the probate file for Henry HILL

Did a little further digging > largely to try and sort out who the 2nd "Henry HILL, farmer" was ?   ;)   [It seems he was also known as Harry HILL and was the son of Henry HILL, farmer of Te Ore Ore. ]

Deaths / Burials

Rather than dying in 1946-47, Henry HILL (senior), Farmer, died on 25 May 1941 aged 81 years.    He is buried at the Archer Street Cemetery in Masterton, with his wife*, Annie Maria HILL (shown on cemetery record as "Maria Annie"), who also died in 1941 on 15th August - aged 68 years.   And sharing the same plot, is Harry HILL - died 5 June 1934 aged 40 years.

*  Henry HILL (Senior) appears to have married Annie Maria, in New Zealand in 1911.

Henry HILL -- Annie Maria MADKINS -- 1911

Mmm ... was just getting to the Probate record for Annie Maria HILL ... I see Beg has already given the link.  ;D

Rallenza, you'll find though that the named beneficiaries are connected to the LOFT family you were seeking in an earlier thread.

When I read through the Will of Henry HILL (d. 1941) earlier, I noted that the executor of same, Cameron James DOUGLAS, son-in-law of Henry HILL, stated that Henry had told him he'd been born in Birmingham.

Henry (listed as Harry) HILL 41 yrs, his wife Ada (36) and children, Ida B. - 9 yrs / Harry - 8 yrs and Hilda M. - 4 years, are residing in Warwickshire > Aston Manor, in 1901.
[In 1901 Henry HILL is recorded as born "Warwick - Aston" ... in 1891, listed as born "Lancs - Manchester" ??  ]

Haven't been able to pinpoint exactly when the HILL family arrived in NZ ... they may have travelled separately ?  Rather too many HILLs to wade through.

Henry HILL and daughter Ida, were in NZ by 1911, as both married in that year.

Ida Beatrice HILL -- Robert William DEATH -- 1911
-----------

Henry HILL's bride, Annie Maria MADKINS, was also residing at Aston , Warwick in 1901 (with her parents and some siblings).
She is probably the "Miss A. MADKINS" who arrived at Wellington, NZ from London aboard the ship "Tongariro" in February, 1911.

Henry's second daughter, Hilda Maud HILL married in 1921 to Cameron James DOUGLAS.

Harry HILL (son of Henry HILL and first wife Ada ?) died in 1934 - a Probate file in his name, records that he died "intestate".  It seems that he did not wed.

Hello again Minniehaha, and hello Lucy2 and Beg Clonrode,

Many thanks for your research. I will absorb this over this weekend, and no doubt it will raise further questions.

I had re-read some letters from NZ and these had mentioned TeOreOre, which previously I had overlooked because I was focussing on the core of my Grandma in NZ. Another letter from PN mentioned the maori hut, with  actual names. Old newspapers have been a good source but revealed nothing this time round. Hence my request. Apparently the son was very religious and lived in a water tower.

So, Lucy2, the connection with the Loft family will be interesting and is unexpected.

Thanks for your efforts so far, very much appreciated.

Will write again.

Rallenza

later ps: Minniehaha- the Henry and harry (Henry Jnr) were the names mentioned in previous letters, so the results are good, just need to see where they fit in.  I just couldnt find any previous link with a madkins. Fresh pairs of eyes...............
