John Lockyer Huntly

Looking for entry into Australia of John Lockyer Huntly.  I have not found a death or birth as yet.
We know that he married Ellen Macdaniel where is unknow.
But I did find 6 births on the Victorian BDM first in 1854.
John occupation appears to be engineer in Hawkesdale area of Victoria.
Any further info would be great....

He died in 1907 and left a will.

There's also the death of his wife Ellen in 1900, gives her father as Patrick and mother as Ellen - possibly related is the Patrick who died in 1870, in Belfast, Victoria (also an area where John and Ellen lived).

The estate record of Patrick McDaniel dated 1871 (available on the link Dundee left earlier in the thread), has John Lockyer Huntly providing affidavits - it also lists his five children, all "infants" (not necessarily babies, but underage) , so this Patrick is more likely the brother or cousin of Ellen.

The best move would be to get a birth certificate of one of the children born in Victoria. These have a lot of information including birth place of parents, when and where married, and previous issue.

The Victorian Gazette has unclaimed letters at the Melbourne, 31st May 1852 for a John Huntly of Melbourne.

Unfortunately not a very useful obit for family historians!

If you google "macarthur cemetery victoria" there are a few links to photos and other information, also to the MacArthur Historical Society who may be helpful; John Lockyer HUNTLY gets a short mention in the history section, but not very useful.  However they may have more records.

Hi.  I can pretty well tell you all there is to know about JL Huntly, my grgr grandfather and Ellen nee McDaniel.  Where he was educated.  There is no record of his marriage to Ellen.  The date on the children's births are also a bit dodgie.  I always assumed a) this was at the time of civil registration and the then minister at Port Fairy complained about the cost of pens and paper for re-writing all his records; or b) that she was catholic irish and it wasn't approved of by her parents.  The first two children were not registered or didn't get onto the civil registration system.  Ellen's father's name was Richard also not Patrick.  He was nicnamed Paddy being irish, even that isn't true he was from the western isles of Scotland.  Feel free to pm me.  Debra L

This chap was apparently born in Ireland.

Yes, Patrick McDaniel was Ellen's younger brother so therefore John Lockyer Huntly's brother-in-law.  Ellen's only sibling.  Both were born in Passage West, Cork.  Mother was Anne Curran born West Passage, and father was Richard McDaniel often McDonnell/Mcdonald.  He was born in Stornoway.  Both father and son drowned at different times, off the coast of Port Fairy.  The "infants" named in the Will/Probate are Patrick and Lavinia's children.
