I would not initially mind the age difference or change to agricultural labourer; had the occupation been diversely different e.g. egg merchant to book binder I would be less inclined to follow clues
Thomas DORNEY of Lismolin (F David) m Julia CROAKE of Ballyvadlea (F William)
on Oct 03 1871 in Killenaule, Co. Tipperary
in 1911 they stated that they had 11 children of which 8 were alive
I can see 9 definite births for this couple plus one additional:
1871 Jul 7 Mary DURNEY
1873 Apr 27 Johanna DURNEY
1875 Apr 15 Anne DORNEY
1879*
There is a civil record in Callan for a Richard but without seeing it can't tell if correct1881 Nov 24 Michael DURNEY (1)
1884 Mar 01 Catherine DURNEY (twin)
1884 Mar 01 William DURNEY (twin)
1886 Jul 02 Thomas DURNEY1888 Apr 18 Margaret DURNEY
1889 Oct 12 Micahel DURNEY (2)
The birth records show Thomas DORNEY senior as a "small dealer" or "labourer"
The baptism records for the parish of Ballingarry are not online for this period (up to 1881)
If this is him it gives a correct aged of 72 at the time of his death
Ages were often guess-timates and sometimes way off! Also often changed to suit circumstances i.e. some people aged to gain a pension or grew younger to marry!
