Address: 2 Terrace Buildings UD

I am investigating my husband's family history. He migrated to Australia as a boy and he still has most of his family in Stoke-on-Trent. As I look at certificates and other information I have a couple of questions:

His great uncle was born in 1920 at:
"2 Terrace Buildings UD" in the Registration District of Stoke-upon-Trent in the Sub-district of Fenton.

1. Where is '2 Terrace Buildings UD"? Would it still exist?
2. What is the difference between - Stoke-upon-Trent, Stoke on Trent, and Stoke-on-Trent?

Hi Merrelynn 

There is absolutely no difference between Stoke and Stoke on Trent. All the same place. UD means urban district, as opposed to RD which means rural district.


Did you know that Stoke is famous for its pottery manufacturing? Maybe your family worked in that industry.

The address of Terrace Buildings, Fenton. Stoke-Upon-Trent is included on the 1901 census.   The Enumeration District that includes Terrace Buildings also includes China St, Cross St, Gate St, Tramway, part of Duke St, Meakins Row, Canning St and Mason Street.

Being so far away in Queensland Australia it is challenging to get a 'picture' in my head to help me understand. We did go back to Stoke in the mid-90s so that my husband could introduce our daughters and I to his grandmother. My memory of Stoke was of lots of road works. It was Christmas time and it felt very very cold although I loved how the spider webs shone in the night lights.

Michael's mother worked in the Wedgwood pottery and I have a very small photo of her standing in front of her bench when she was about 16. Michael's grandfather, and a number of ancestors, worked in the mines. In fact his paternal grandfather was killed in a mine accident in 1956 - I haven't confirmed that information yet.

As this is my first steps into the English lines I am sure I will have more questions later. Again, thank you.

At number 2 Terrace buildings in 1911 were the Higgins family, William 26, louisa 26, Henry 7 and
Nellie 2, they had 2 sons John 1902 and William 1906 who died within a few months of birth.
They also had after 1911
Charlotte Elizabeth 1912
Susan 1914
Doris 1917
Mary ann 1919
James 1921.

hopefully if the Higgins family occupied the house for a few years this will be your family

Thank you for that information on who lived at No2 Terrace Bldgs in the 1911 Census. I had not realised that I had not named the family I was researching - still so much to learn.

On the 1911 Census, David Osborne and his family were living at No9 Terrace Bldgs. He had moved to No 2 Terr Bldgs when one of his son's birth was registered. He was a 'coal miner hewer'. He served in WW1, enlisting in 1914 and serving in France. He was discharged in 1919 but reenlisted for the State of Emergency of 1921. When he was discharged in July 1921 he was still at No2. I haven't progressed any further with him just yet.

It's so lovely to experience the UK in winter isn't it. Such a contrast to Qld.

I haven't had a look at the map links supplied yet, but often a terrace of houses is given a name which is not the same as a street name. You can still see the plaques with these names on buildings in many streets in the UK - they are usually up high near the upstairs windows.
