MARRIAGE;
6 November 1815, Astbury, Cheshire**, England
Joseph SHERRATT to Sarah SHUFFLEBOTHAM
(Familysearch.Org)

1851 in Biddulph we have;
Joseph Stanway, 53,  born Biddulph
Sarah Stanway, 53, born Horton
James Stanway, 30
Abraham Stanway, 22
David Stanway, 20
Mary Stanway, 15
Harriet Stanway    13
Elizabeth Stanway, 8
Elijah Mountford , 8
Thomas Holland, 11

1841 Census
Josh Stanway, 25, Grit? Seller
Josh Stanway, 40, Cattlle Dealer
Sarh Stanway, 40
James Stanway, 18
John Stanway, 15
Wm Stanway, 13
ABM Stanway, 10
David Stanway, 6
Mary Stanway, 4
Harriott Stanway, 2

This is confusing!
The Elizabeth age 8 in 1851 looks like the baptism I found a few pages back on this thread, but it implied the couple were not married. Could the 1815 one be Banns and no marriage took place? I have one in my tree where a couple had Banns read but no marriage, lived together as man and wife and had three children, then married much later.

There is a baptism record at Biddulph for

Elizabeth Shufflebottom d/o Joseph and Sarah. bapt Aug 13 1854, born 16 Feb 1843. In the surname column is Stanway alias Sheratt. Joseph is a farmer.
So is Joseph illegitimate and has the two surnames, and has an illegitimate child with Sarah Shufflebottam (who he married later??).

There is a marriage reg in Leek district Q1 1887 for Joseph Stanway Sherratt, one of the two possible brides is Sarah Shufflebotham.

1887 marriage must be just a coincidence, looks like Joseph who married 1815 died in 1859.

Hi lizzieL, I have William Stanwayb1726-1800
                                   Joseph1767-1829
                                   Joseph Sherratt? Stanway1858
                                   Abraham Stanway (Elizabeth's Father) 1831-1893.
These are on my tree, what i would like to clear up is Elizabeth Emily, Emily, Elizabeth Stanway 1874-75-77? plus now it looks like Joel Ball Lee "Done a Bunk".

Yes, bit of a tangled web;

If Joel was in Canada after 1898 who is the Father of ;
Philip N Lee 1901, died soon after 1901 Census
Thomas Lancelot Lee 1902

Sidney Hitchman Lee is obvious as to having Samuel Hitchman as his Father.

There is another Joseph Stanway in Biddulph in 1841 and 51 abt 3 years older than Joseph Stanway / Sherratt. He is with Tabitha in 1841, there is a marriage in 1830 of Tabitha Bayley widow and Joseph Stanway widow at Horton. Tabitha is buried in Biddulph on 4 Feb 1851. The first marriage for this Joseph could be to Olive Beech in 1815. An Olive Stanway was buried in Biddulph in 1829, her age was 32, so born abt 1797.

And a third Joseph Stanway b Horton abt 1796 living Biddulph in 1861, wife Harriet. Probably the Joseph bach who married Harriet Bayley sp in Horton on Feb 22 1841.

And there looks like quite a large number of Sherratts as well. Biddulph is quite sizeable, over 19,000 population at last census, 4,769 in 1871 and 5,557 in 1881.

I think unless you can make contact with any other descendants of these Families who have photos finding any may be impossible.
