List of Servants living with family 1850s.
« on: Monday 06 June 16 01:11 BST (UK) »
Where can I see a list of servants for either Catton Hall in Derbyshire or 25 Bruton Street, London for the time period of 1820-1891?

Louisa Frances Horton grew up in Horton Hall and then married the Rev Richard Carelton and lived at 25 Bruton Street in London.

My ancestors were servants for this family.  I havent been able to find any list of servants at all, but have gotten some replies that there are 10 servants listed as living at 25 Bruton.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you found your ancestors in the relevant census records?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

And not all servants were living in with a family particularly in towns and cities.

It would help if you could tell us who you are looking for - ca. 10 servants a fair old number and the only way to find them is on the census.

Hi,

There a a number of records re Catton Hall held at Derbyshire Record Office:-

http://calmview.derbyshire.gov.uk/calmview/Overview.aspx

However these do not appear to contain any records relating to servants.

Servants moved about, so if you are searching for an ancestor who was a servant to the Carleton
family it would assist research if you gave as much info as you can about your ancestor.

Hi,

This gives some info - see how the family name changes and who actually inherited:-

Horton family were well connected with other local families.

Perhaps kathywithak  will let us know who she is looking for.

Hi guys,
Sorry, I should have said who I was looking for.

The name is William Ansell and his wife Ann Green Ansell.  William Ansell is said to be a coachman.  They lived with their children in 25 Bruton Mews, the street behind their employeer.  The Carletons lived at 25 Bruton Street.
