Looking for Elizabeth Wild
« on: Thursday 02 June 16 12:34 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

The marriage certificate for my 3x great grandparent's marriage arrived today - the marriage of Abraham Ashforth and Elizabeth Wild, at the Parish Church in Rotherham on 10th August 1840.

I've been having some trouble finding Elizabeth Wild's family however. This is what I know about her:
- her maiden name is Wild - she is a spinster on the marriage to Abraham in 1840.
- she was of full age in 1840, and from the 1841 and 1851 censuses, they suggest that she was born somewhere around 1810-1816, and in Butterley in Derbyshire (1841 census suggests she wasn't born in Yorkshire, and 1851 census suggests Butterley).
- her father was John Wild, whose occupation was a turner in 1840 when Elizabeth married. He isn't a witness at the wedding (the witnesses were Matthew Windle and Jonathan Preston).
- she was living in Kimberworth in Rotherham at the time of her marriage (and so was Abraham).
- with Abraham, she had the following children; Aaron (1840-1855), Alice (b 1842), Louisa (1846-1909) and Elijah Thomas (1851-1922).

I could only find one baptism of an Elizabeth Wild with a father called John in Derbyshire but that was at Chelmorton, which is miles away from Butterley. Help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Holly

Trying to narrow her birthyear down

In 1851 she is 41 so birthyear 1810 - living in Ecclesfield Yorkshire - RD Wortley

There is a death Dec qtr 1858 in Wortley and a burial for an Elizabeth Ashforth at Ecclesfield St Mary but she was only 39

In 1860 - Abraham re-married in the Sheffield RD but is back living in Ecclesfield in 1861

There is an 1856 death in Sheffield for an Elizabeth Ashforth and a burial at St Philips Sheffield but she was 50yrs old

On the PR entry this record shows father's occupation as a heel maker in case the occupation helps, abode Wirksworth at the time of baptism

Thank you everyone for the replies, it looks like I'll be looking in Derbyshire as a whole for the baptism - as there doesn't seem to be one in Butterley.
The one at Wirksworth seems to be the most likely based on location so far - her father could well have changed occupation between Elizabeth's birth and her marriage. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to be able to confirm that the Wirksworth baptism is the correct one though  ???

Have a browse through Wirksworth PR transcriptions to see if there might be a clue

Thanks Shirl, I've just had a quick look. It doesn't appear that this Wirksworth Elizabeth married in Wirksworth at least, so that's a good sign.

Added: Also it looks as if the name was sometimes spelled Wylde, with there being a Charles Wylde baptized in Wirksworth christened 1815 Jun 25, son of John and Elizabeth, John being a heelmaker.

I've just found a record on FamilySearch, saying that the Elizabeth WILD baptized 03 Jan 1819 at Wirksworth (born 29 Nov 1818), daughter of John and Elizabeth, seems to have died 05 Dec 1819.
So it looks like this baptism at Wirksworth can't be the right one :-\

That's also on the Wirksworth PRs too, buried 5 Dec 1819 - at least it's ruled that one out
