After a few weeks focusing on other work I am trying to get back into the Baxters of Rothley and Cossington. Going through all of the previous posts I seem to be at a dead end with John Baxter (married to Catherine). As their first child was born in 1756 I would guess that his birth year would be approximately 1730 to 1735. The Rothley records do not appear to have a John christened in this time period, nor do we have a marriage for himself and Catherine around 1755. Might he have been from an adjacent parish? Given the Baxters reappear earlier in Rothley I am inclined to keep looking there. I have found an earlier marriage in Phillimore:
John Baxter & Elizabeth Bunnes 24 Dec. 1722

Could these have been his parents

Familysearch has a marriage for John Baxter & Catharina Hatterley at Rothley 28 Jun 1755, has this been ruled out?

Added: Just checked my marriage index CD and its recorded there as John Backester & Catherine Hetterley, both OTP, after banns.

Thanks Jomot,
I do think it is a possibility. It works phonetically, geographically and chronologically. Is this from the parish records? No mention of parents or witnesses? I just went through the Phillimore Rothley listings this morning and must have missed that one. Too focused on exact spelling.

The familysearch information is a transcript of the Bishop's Transcript.  The information on my CD is taken from the PRs but there is no additional information I'm afraid.

Thanks Jomot, I have now seen the record in Phillimore's. You did mention an alternate version of the name of Catherina Hatterley. Where was this from? Must be the same person.

The spellings John Baxter & Catharina Hatterley were from the Familysearch transcripts of the BT's. The spellings John Backester & Catherine Hetterley were from the LRFHS transcripts of the PRs.

There seems to have been numerous spellings of the surname, although most seem to begin with 'He' rather than 'Ha'.
