Thanks Diddy,
I'll establish what we have and plan the next assault. I am wondering how far back the Baxters were in Cossington.

Diddy, Carol and Bunnygirl,

I think my next request should be the baptism of John Baxter (buried 02 August 1828), probably born circa 1770. His father's name may have been Joseph and he may be the Joseph who was buried in 1822. Joseph was always used in the family naming right down to my grandfather. The younger Joseph (b. 25 july 1790) appears to have been a member of the Rothley Baptist Chapel, where he may have met his wife Elizabeth Barsby. He may have been the Joseph Baxter who was thrown out for drunkenness and other disorderly behavior, which may explain their subsequent move into Leicester.

So I guess my next two requests would be: any baptism or marriage records for both John and Elizabeth Baxter of Cossington. We still do not have a maiden name for John's wife Elizabeth. And before we leave Joseph I still do not have a burial record for him and Elizabeth (nee Barsby) which would likely be St Margarets Parish in Leicester. He was living at 127 Belgrave Gate as late as 1846.

Enjoy your bank holiday Diddy. I should note that I am also interested in Richard Baxter's family. While we have no Richards in our line, he both lived in Cossington and had a son whom he named Richard John Baxter. Although they appear to be of a different social level (Richard was an elector and had land holdings in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire and sent his son Richard John to Uppingham School) it seems that Cossington is too small a village for there to be no relationship. I know of the will he left and may be forced to spend money (gasp!) on an archive order to see whether it contains any gems.

Found this marriage that looks promising

John Baxter & Elizabeth Warren 2 Sept 1781 at Barkby, Leicestershire (about 3 miles from Cossington)

Looking at the children that Bunnygirl gave you, their first child was Dec 1781.

Joseph and his wife Jane (not Elizabeth - easy to get the generations muddled!) are buried together in Welford Rd Cemetery, Leicester, in a grave which contains a number of other people who may well not be connected. (Note that Joseph was buried on the same day as two unnamd infants in the same grave).

If you're unfamiliar with the format, it's this:

Name; date of burial; age at death; place of death; parish; any other notes

Plot uA 702
GARRETT   ---   1864   AUG   29   INF   LYNDHURST STREET   SAINT GEORGE   SON OF EMMA
CANK   ---   1864   AUG   29   STBN      CAROLINE STREET   SAINT MARGARET   CHILD OF ANN
BAXTER   JOSEPH   1864   AUG   29   age 75   BELGRAVE ROAD   SAINT MARGARET
BAXTER   JANE   1870   OCT   30   age 82   RUSSELL SQUARE   SAINT MARGARET   CORONER'S WARRANT

WILSON   MAUD ETHEL   1896   DEC   9   age 9MTHS   CRANE STREET   LEICESTER
BATEMAN   ANNIE   1935   JUL   31   age 78   WYGGESTON HOSPITAL   LEICESTER

Given that a coroner's warrant was issued for Jane, I looked in the papers to see if there was anything about her death, but couldn't see anything.

Jane and Joseph are there in the 1851 and 1861 censuses btw if you have a look.

Thank you (again) Carol and Annie. The questions seem to be answered faster than I can get back to my computer to check. I wonder if there was a typhoid outbreak at the time if multiple persons were quickly buried it is often the case.
