Help please with Baptism in Fylingdales
« on: Thursday 12 May 16 22:17 BST (UK) »
Please could anyone help me?

I know that Elizabeth Archer was baptised in Fylingdales Parish Church in March 1772/3.

Please, is anyone in a position to look up this baptism in the Parish Register (not BTs), to see if an abode is stated? I would be very grateful for any help,

Thanks,

Kit

Hi Kit,

Sorry I've just seen this post, maybe a bit late

I have a transcription of the baptisms and the abode is given as Peak, dau of John

There's also a brother (I assume) Edward, son of John bap 11/2/1770 abode Peak

Hi Nannawilk,

That's brilliant!

No, it certainly isn't too late - that really has been so helpful, and I now have further leads to follow, so I'm very grateful to you.
Please, could I pick your brains? Do you know, in Fylingdales, where roughly the areas referred to as Peak, Brow and Bay are? That would be very useful to know.

Thanks again,

Kit

Hi, I'm pleased I wasn't too late  :D

Peak would refer to Ravenscar

Bay would refer to Robin Hood's Bay

I'm not sure about Brow but I think it's the moor in between

The places are shown on this map. Bay Mill is South of Robin Hoods Bay, just above the word Fylingdales where the main stream comes down to the coast. Brow Alum works and Quarry are next South, and Peak Alum works and Quarry further South with Peak Hill being East of the quarry.

Hi Nanna and john,

Thanks very much for your kind help - I thought that Peak and Bay were where they are (but it is good to have it confirmed!), but I was confused as to where Brow was. The map really is excellent!

Thanks again,

Kit
