German Pork Butchers George Michael Weidner

Hi All,

I'm totally new on here and hoping for some help researching my great great grandparents. Picking up the mantle from my grandfather...

My great great grandfather's name was George Michael Weidner and he was a German pork butcher that emigrated to the Manchester area somewhere between 1881 and 1891.  The info. I have so far is that he was born in Schwabisch Hall on 17th June 1867.
My great great grandmother was Christina Belschner, and I believe she originated from close to Schwabisch Hall.  They were married in Chorlton in 1891.

Does anybody have any tips on how to find out more about them and researching further back into their history?  I'd love to take the tree back as far as possible. 

If anybody has any info. or can help in any way it would be much appreciated!

A copy of their marriage cert should give you the names and occupations of their fathers.

There is a Naturalisation Certificate in 1927 for George Michael Weidner available ( for a fee) on the National Archives site.

I used to live in Baden Wurtemberg in Germany so very interested to read this. Schwaben Land as we used to call it.

George Michael was christened 13 October 1863, Evangelisch Gailenkirche, Jagstkreis.

Georg (pronounced gay-org) Michael

Had at least two brothers:

Johann Michael Weidner christened 14 Dec 1862 - same place

And Michael,  christened same place in 1869, father Johann but mother Magdalena Barbara Schuerrle

Jules1066 you have a lot of details  :)  Thank you very much for sharing.  I'm currently based in the Alsace so not far from Baden-Wurttemburg.  Seems like the 1867 date of birth I had for him might be a little off...
Can I ask how you came across the info.?
Any tips for resources and research around Baden-Wurttemburg?

lizdb - nice tip for the wedding certificate...don't have a copy at the moment but will try to get hold of one  ;)

There are naturalisation case papers available at TNA, Kew in HO 144. These should provide a wealth of family information (if you are lucky), much more than just the naturalisation certificate, but you will have to either visit Kew to view them, get a researcher to do it for you, or get TNA to quote for copying.
