It wouldn't surprise me if MS were trying to persuade people to upgrade by causing issues with Windows Update. There definitely have been more issues get the updates to install recently. I've already had to fix WU on my mother's 9.5 year old laptop once this year and two months later its stopped checking for updates again so looks like I shall be working on it again.

I've had to give my own one which is only 3 years old a "kicking" a couple of times to get WU working properly but so far they've not beaten me.

Offer ends 29th July 2016, then whatever Microsoft decides to charge.

Not exactly whatever they decide to charge. It is possible to buy Windows 10 anyway now from various sources at various prices, and I would imagine they will release upgrades after the tend of the free period. OK you have to pay but I suspect many PCs that don't get upgraded will probably "expire" before Win7 or 8 are out of MS support anyway. Only issues going forward will be some other software will stop working on older versions of windows, but there are ways around it.
Its not the end of the world if you don't update and it wouldn't surprise me if my parent's refuse to upgrade their two desktops anyway. It was bad enough getting them to use Win7 after XP, don't fancy trying to get them using Win10 particularly.

My mother's laptop won't take Win10 anyway as the bios isn't compatible because of its age.
