Hi Joan
I had a look in the Wallasey marriages there was a marriage in 1882/3 for a John Morris but the wife didn't match even though there were other female Hugh's Marriages (was that her full name) . I also looked In the street and postal directories to see if i could find him.I found two Johns different addresses but no initials, before 1885. If a person moved round a lot and lived with others i am not sure if they would be included in the postal directories.usually it is only the owner or the renter of a house that is mentioned, as far as i know. The other difficult thing is that in the earlier directories in wallasey & Birkenhead area.Houses were not numbered they were named. Because a lot were cottages so had names like Rose cottage,Brick cottage and so on.Sorry i couldnt  be of
more help.

Celia,

Could you have a look for a marriage between Hugh (sometimes called Evan) COLQUITT (various spellings!) and Ann/Nancy OWEN/OWENS in the early 1830s?  Their first (?) child Catherine/Katherine was christened in Wallasey (presumably St Hilary's) in 1835.  Ann/Nancy was from Moreton, but all the children were born in New Brighton or Egremont so the marriage could be Wallasey as I can't find it in Bidston.

TIA
Sheila

Hello Sheila
If  Catherine was Christened in St Hilary,Liscard Wallasey  Which is C.O.E that is where the couple would have probably Married. You don't usually marry in one church and C the children in another, unless you married then moved to another part of the country. For the record, Morton,New Brighton, Egremont & Bidston are in Wallasey and a short distance from each other. I will let you know in a couple of days of any finds. Is there anything else you would like me to look up while i am in the library?

Hello Sheila
I will have to change the year on the topic  :) The Books i look in are the reference books of B.M.D Of the G.R.O. So they only go from the registration year (still new to this:D )
So i couldn't find Hugh, but there is another book i can look in for the marriage. There is an  earlier  book i think goes back to the beginning of time, very old church :)  It was transcribed by someone many years ago.All with one of  those big black typewriters. So i will look in that one,in the meantime i found in the reference book of Marriages that might come into your tree at a later date.

Colquitt. Elizabeth  167 1885 C11/3 St Hilary
              John          61   1897 Wallasey St John C1/2
Martha Ann 217 1896 Seacombe St Paul C10/2
Numbers are Vol & Page
I have also copied out 16 Colquitt births from 1840 to 1872 thats only half of them ;D and 9 deaths from 1840 to 1882 one of them is for a Hugh. So i will translate my writing and type it out then copy it on a post later.

Celia P.S let me know if you want these or not, so i don't do the  unnecessary :)or if you just want the deaths

Having looked through my posts,it looks like i might confuse someone ;D to look up marriages in wallasey i mainly use two books. One is Marriages in wallasey Plus the Churches that goes from 1800 to 1901 but there are only a few of both those years then all years in between are in it. The other one as said is the G.R.O reference book of marriages in wallasey, and starts later. So if a marriage hasn't been transcribed onto the net i might find it in that book.I also have available  at the library the postal directories for Cheshire from 1700    1745 to about 1970.some are missing though. So i am happy to do a look up with those while i am at the library.

You're a wonderful person, Celia, to help us all so much.
I'll be away for about a month, but I'll look forward to anything you might dig up.  Just don't want you to think I'm ignoring you.
Many thanks, Joan

Hi Joan
No i would never think that, you are very prompt with your replies. This lets me get the work done :)
Seeing that you will be away for a month and i went out earlier than expected.I better leave a message or i will have forgotten what i did in another month ;D I did look for the marriage again but still didn't find it :(  I think i may go further back. I had a look in the directories as well, still no sign. I once saw a notice in one of the books that still makes me smile. It said that all illegal marriage where held by the registrar. How could you be married if it was illegal maybe your couple are in there.Only kidding ;D
