Hi,

Can you give details of the 1807 Newspaper article?

If someone born in Somerset or Middlesex married in Dublin then came back to England, he might have gone back to the army. I have three men in my tree who were born in England and I thought they had lived all their lives quite close to their birthplaces but all had one child born in Ireland. I thought it was a mistake on the census record until I had found they had all done a spell in the army and one had married in Ireland as well.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Not sure he was back in the army given he had deserted in 1807, my cousin is going to try to do a search for him

One other thought, in the 1807 newspaper report he was described as a shoemaker by trade as well as being a drummer in the army. He was only 18 so unlikely to have served a full apprenticeship as a shoemaker by then. Perhaps a family member was a shoemaker and he learnt from them rather than a formal apprenticeship.

Hello

yes you could be right there. The family I think he comes from though were landed gentry, but i as the family think he fled home after a quarrel he may have had to get a trade and quick

Maybe it would help us if you said who you thought he may be descended from  :-\
