Another Murray puzzle
« on: Monday 02 May 16 05:02 BST (UK) »
A great-great uncle William Murray (another one!) born Airdrie in 1848 married Mary McKinnon born in Balfron Stirlingshire in 1852. Marriage cert from ScotlandsPeople - married on 8 August, 1873 in Govan. Also from ScPe. a birth certificate for Janet Turnbull Murray on 5 May 1874 in Barony. My problem is that in Census for 81, 91 and 1901 (and the correct family I believe) the eldest is Martha born either 73 or 74. I cannot find a matching birth record for her - nor can I find Janet Turnbull Murray in the Census. Janet Turnbull was William's mother and Martha was the name of Mary McKinnon's grandmother and younger sister. What am I missing??

Hi

One possible explanation is that Martha was born before the marriage of William and Mary. I note there is a birth on familysearch for a Martha Mckinnon 9 Sep 1872 in Hutchenstown, Glasgow , mother Mary Mckinnon. This might be worth following up on SP as might checking for a death for Janet Turnbull Murray before the 1881 census.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Just for the record is this the correct family in the 1881 census address Thorn Bank Maryhill
William Murray age 33 b Airdrie occupation builder master
Mary Murray age 29 Balfron
Martha age 8 .John 5 .Thomas 3

There is a death for a Janet Murray 1877 age 4 in Maryhill maybe worth looking at on S P

Thank you to both for the suggestions. I am as certain as one can be that the 1881 census is the correct family as it ticks all the boxes (except for Martha!) I shall follow up on both the death of Janet and  earlier birth of a Martha.

Rosie's lead to Janet Murray was the correct one. Janet died at Thornbank House, Maryhill in Nov 1877 aged 3 and a half of hydrocephalus. Now I just have to load up my SP credits and follow up William's lead.  Thank you both :)

William's tip also panned out as Martha was Illegitimate on the birth certificate and Mary McKinnon was a domestic servant - as was the Mary McKinnon who married William Murray. No age or place of birth for the mother is on the birth certificate to cross check but, given that I can find no Martha McKinnon daughter of Mary in the 1881 Census am I fairly safe to assume this is 'my' Martha?  :)
