What was John Davidge's trade?

You have probably seen (Lancs OPC again):

And on Find My Past, this marriage (Bishops Transcript record):
25 March 1788, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire
John Davidg of Bolton in the County of Lancashire to Diana Hattersley of this parish

I don't know if there's a connection here with your Davidge family

John Davidge may have moved to Ringley because of his occupation as a papermaker.As a Lancashire girl I do know that there were paper mills in the area of Bolton, may still be.Ringley is on the outskirts & he would not have far to travel.I do know that one of them closed down some years ago as one of our family worked there.

Surely this is the baptism of Elizabeth on familysearch:

Eliz. Davage bp.30/11/1786 Bolton le Moors, Turton, Lancashire, dau. of John and Diana.

Can't produce one for Diana but with the time frame one would suppose her to have been bc.1788.   If she died at/soon after birth it's possible the baptism got 'overlooked' somehow.

If, as seems likely, the marriage in 1788 is correct it looks as if at least first child was born before the parents got around to marrying.

As to John Davidge - how do you know he was bc.1752?

Have found Diana - listed as Dinah:

Dinah Davig, bp.24/3/1788 Ecclesfield, Yorkshire dau. of John.

This is where her parents John and Diana/Dinah Hattersley married on the following day!.

Dinah Hattersley bp.6/2/1763 Ecclesfield, dau. of Jonathan.   Surely husband John Davidge more likely to be around the same age as her, rather than born circa 1752??

Hi Ladyhawk.
Thanks for that i have all original birth's at Ringley and the entry for a DIANA DAVIDGE burial ,but i have no idea who she is at the moment ,we have for some years now been trying to tie the northern DAVIDGE's to the southern lot ,maybe this could be the tie in??.

You are thanking Ladyhawk and state you still have no idea who the Diana bur.1789 is but make no mention of my 2 postings that followed hers in which I have found the 2 baptisms you were looking for - Elizabeth 1786 in Bolton (where John is stated to come from) and Dinah 1788 in Ecclesfield where he married before he and wife Diana returned to Lancashire. 

Nor have you answered how you know John was bc.1752.

Some kind of response to my findings would be nice.

Hi Annette7.
Sorry about that getting carried away.
I received some documents from a distant relly and it originally said that JOHN was born 1763 .
I have since been told that he was in fact 36yrs old when they married 1788 ,that being the case it would make his birth 1752 and DIANA'S(dinah) 1763.
However i am not 100% as yet to whether that is right or not, i do somewhere have the original wedding entry ,but having recently moved cannot find it at the moment.
So you can see at the moment it's going to be a little bit of luck as i have been looking for this man for about 5 years.

I must be getting slow in my old age ,could the DIANA(dinah) bp 24th march 1788 day before marriage be the DIANA DAVIDGE buried st saviour   7th feb 1789.

Yes, I believe that 'Dinah' bp.1788 Ecclesfield is the 'Diana' bur.1789 Ringfield.

Even if you find your copy of the marriage entry it won't state his age.  The only time ages got mentioned then is if one or both of them was under 21.   I'm also guessing that his age is not given on his burial entry??

Without some real proof otherwise, I would think John more likely to have been born ca.1762.

Interestingly, on the baptism and marriage at Ecclesfield surname was transcribed as Davis or Davig for the baptism, and Davedge (ML), Davidg (BT) and Davodge for the marriage.

Find my Past has a marriage licence index entry (transcript only) for the Davidge/Hattersley marriage, dated 25 Mar 1788. It has John Davedge age 36 (so born c. 1752) of Bolton and Diana Hattersley age 25 (so born 1763) of Ecclesfield.

This is probably where your date of birth info came from.
