COMPLETE - Help wanted re Ball ancestors arrival in Canada
« on: Wednesday 20 July 05 07:37 BST (UK) »
When, and where and on what ship did Albert and Alice Ball (nee Spice) arrive in Canada?

They married 26 April 1913 in Hastings, Sussex, England and immigrated to Canada probably within 1913 but no later than first quarter 1914.

Port of Departure - don’t know - but given they lived in Hastings, then  Southampton would be a first choice . . . although London and Liverpool could not be discounted.

Port of Arrival - don’t know - but they spent all their lives in Ontario, starting off in Appleton or Smith Falls with time subsequently spent over the years in Guelph, Preston, Kitchener/Waterloo.

Thanks for any assistancec.

Do you know what year they were in Guelph?  I have some old phonebooks.

If you know where the were living in 1940 you could order their National Registration form which will tell you.

The following makes it sound as though I traveled with them, but it is everything I have managed to put together, apart from the three children they had all born in Canada starting in 1914.

They emigrated to Canada in 1913 where they lived in Ottawa for many years. They subsequently lived in Lanark County, Ontario, Toronto and Hespeler Township, Cambridge. Upon arriving in Canada it was thought that Albert worked as a blacksmith, but in 1926 It he was employed at a woollen mill in Hespeler. Their final move was in 1940 to nearby Preston where Albert retired in 1942.

A photograph of them was taken at Edgewood Camp, a Lutheran Church facility in Guelph, Ontario. If they were (as it appears) both in their 70’s it would date the photograph as being in the mid-1940s.

Alice died on 28 May 1956, aged 80, in her home at 1430 King Street, Preston Township, Cambridge, Ontario, and was buried in the city’s Parklawn Cemetery.

Albert aged 93 on 15 August 1966 in Hespeler Township, Cambridge, and and was buried in Parklawn Cemetery.

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Hi BRYAN,

Camp Edgewood, is located in a small town east of Guelph, called  Eden Mills....
I might suggest that you contact the facility to see if they could check their records to help you date the photo?

The current mailing address is:  Edgewood Camp and Conference Center, 49 Memorial, Eden Mills, ontario, Canada  N0B 1P0 (519) 856-9622.

Good luck in your search

Hi there,

Do you live in Canada or abroad??? I'm quite familiar with the Guelph/Cambridge area.... As well, you may want to try posting on the "Lanark County Genealogy" site...My Grt Grandparents settled in Smith's falls after immigrating from Ireland and Scotland and then made their way to Guelph....had success with them on the Lanark board.

Hi Bryan,

Just a couple of little tidbits for you:

Hespeler was a huge mill town.  The Forbes company operated it for 54 years from 1874 to 1928 and  the Dominion Woollens was the name from 1928 to 1958.  It is a huge building (now mostly torn down).  "The plant has 544,678 square feet (12.5 acres) of floor space on its four floors.  It was built in stages, the last in 1923"

Preston, Hespeler and Galt are three towns that are now referred to as  Cambridge, Ontario they amalgamated many years ago.  It is now known as the City of Cambridge, Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

Have you located the microfilm numbers yet so that you can search the passenger lists?   I believe during the summer months alot of ships came into the province of Quebec and they then travelled down the St. Lawrence river, but in the winter months the ships would go to Nova Scotia.

Hello Karen

I have visited http://www.genealogy.gc.ca/10/10080302_e.html and have listed the Quebec arrivals that fell between Albert and Alice’s marriage in England in April 1913 and the definite birth of a daughter in March 1916.

To explain the word “definite” . . . :

There were three children from their marriage, the eldest being “Dolly”, most likely a nickname (diminutive Dol, Dolly, Dora) for Dorothea or Dorothy. It was thought that (a) she was born in early 1914 in either Appleton or Smith Falls, Ontario but died circa 1918, and (b) she was buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto. There is however no documentation to support any of this.

The next child - definite - was Minnie Nellie Ethel Ball who was born 6 March 1916 in [possibly Appleton] Ramsey Township, Lanark County, Ontario. The next child was Albert William Edward Ball who was born 4 March 1921[location unknown].

Given that the microfiche records are not transcribed for online searching and I do not have access to a library in Canada (where I believe one can walk in and view them - even get a copy) I am not sure how to best pursue this.

I appreciate the ongoing assistance received and welcome any guidance.
