Did he stay in Tasmania - what happened to him after transportation
« on: Sunday 24 April 16 12:41 BST (UK) »
I have recently found a conduct report.. some of it is really hard to read..
William Etherington was Transported to Tasmania in 1835 for 14yrs.. aged just 18yrs... He was in a lot of trouble during his stay i think!.. ( i tried to add the conduct report image, but its too large)
Would love to know what happened to him.. Its hard as another william etherington (no relation) was transported in 1847..

From Trove there doesn't seem to be a mention of an Etherington after 1849 until 1853, where I think its the other William Etherington (Lady Kennaway)

The name comes up in police gazettes from the 1860s onwards, but none so far with an age to match who you're looking into

There is also a William Hetherington (Duke of Richmond 1844) and a William Etherington in 1876

I do wonder if he left asap after getting his freedom as from his conduct record he didn't appear to like it here  :P

There were gold rushes around the time he got his freedom so there's a chance he was lured away

This might be totally not relevant, but if you are interested in the surname ETHERINGTON, my neighbours (living three doors away) when I was a child in the late 1950s and 1960s in country NSW was an ETHERINGTON family.  I afterwards shared a flat in Sydney in the 1970s with a daughter of the family.  I don't see much of my friend any more as the family no longer live in the same town, (I have also moved to another town) but I can easily get in touch with her.   As far as I know, I don't think she has any interest in family history, so she may not be of any help to you.

Thank you so much Matthew.. I tried and couldnt find the Certificate.. So im pleased that even after all his behaviour he was freed..
Its horrible coz he was only 19 on arrival.. i keep thinking 'poor boy!' .. He was certainly an interesting chap!.. Hard labor in chains.. terrible...

I hope to find out what happened to him after.. ill keep looking..

And thank you Aurora... (thats the name of Williams Ship, he was transported on!) .. And it could be a bit of a long shot, as i have no idea where William went after he was Freed.. you could certainly ask her!
