Hi,
My ancestors Matthew and Mary Hilton came to Australia in 1882 with six children.
In 1881 they were living at 25 Victoria Street, in Pemberton.
I have a photo of Mary, and on the back is the following note “Photo taken approx. 1881 – Mary HILTON (nee ROWE) born 1848 (wife of Matthew HILTON) arrived Sydney on sailing ship Hereford in 1882”.
In the 1871 census Mary is living in New Town, Pemberton with a widowed Mary ROWE 52
Mary is recorded “Mary* HILTON, Boarder, 22, Wigan, Lancashire”. Her children living with her are those of Matthew HILTON.
In the 1861 census Mary is living with Louis ROWE and Mary ROWE.
Mary is recorded “Mary ROWE, Daughter, 13, Wigan, Lancashire”
I am trying to confirm Mary’s mother.
From the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks database is the following marriage information:
Matthew HILTON - 21, Carpenter, Bachelor, of New Town, Pemberton m Mary JOLLEY - (X), 19, Cotton Spinner, Spinster, of New Town, Pemberton 29 Jul 1867 at St John the Divine, Pemberton, Lancashire
Fathers listed as Matthew HILTON, Carpenter and bride's father Lewis ROWE, Coal Miner
Witness: Thomas Burns; Ann Marsden
Mary is recorded as Mary JOLLEY. I cannot connect the surname “JOLLEY”. All of the other information in the marriage is correct.
Was the surname JOLLEY an entry error, or could there be another explanation.
In the 1871 census there is an * after her name. Would this refer to a note that she was a daughter as well as a boarder?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards, OURA, Australia
