Wellington Archives look up please
« on: Thursday 21 April 16 05:42 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone is likely to be going to the Wellington Archives in the next few weeks April/May 2016, and if so, if they wouldn't mind adding on a couple of queries I have to their trip. (I am based in Auckland and unable to travel due to illness).

I am looking for two items:

1) The Naturalisation papers for John Carlson (Also known as Johan Karlsson Bjornvik), naturalisation date 13 May 1902. [born about 1862 in Finland, Russia to Carl and Carolina Bjornvik]
I am specifically interested if you can take photos so I can get data such as the ship he came to New Zealand on.

2) The other Item I would love to see (hopefully to garner how many years he was in New Zealand) is his Intention to Marry Document. He Married Emma Alice Eden BIRDSEY on 30th December 1885, in Dunedin. (Please see Marriage printout below)

Many Thanks,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

The ITM will only show how long he had lived in the place he got married, not necessarily time in NZ

There is a probate for him at Wellington,do you have that?

AAOM 6029/181 10402 BJORNVIK (CARLSON) Johan Karlson John    1906 Wgtn

Here is a link to the probate which has been digitized

Is this the naturalization? there are several for a John Carlson

ACGO 8333 IA1/842/[31]    1902/503
From: John Carlson, Auckland Date (received): 14 February 1902 Subject: Memorial for naturalisation. Hopes he may receive letters of naturalisation though he is unable to supply certificate: as to character by a Justice of the Peace who has known him for two years 1902 Wgtn

Hi Janette,

I believe the Naturalisation you have above is correct, though as I cannot get to the office I cannot view the documents.

As for the probate, I think I might have it, though it would be good to obtain it, unless you can find it through family search for me?

I have other information as it pertains to his wife, and living children left behind. (Emma Alice Eden Bjornvik/Carlson), I believe there is also an affadavit signed by her in 1907 due to him having no will and testament.

Kind Regards,
Stephanie

Fingers crossed but it's more than likely correct as the Gazette mentions that he is a shipwright, the same occupation as mentioned in his funeral notice.

Not too sure about the Grey Lynn connection though.

Beg
