Wednesfield and Heath Town mines

Reference on many sites is made to mining in Wednesfield in 1325 at LE HAYESCHUTE. Does any one know where this place was and where the reference came from? Also there was a CANKBUCHE  in the area. I am looking at the people killed in New Cross Colliery in 1860 buried in Heath Town Church. Any information welcomed.

If reference is made on many sites, why not contact these sites to ask them where they got the information from?   (They are probably all copying each other, but someone may know a more precise place than Wednesfield).

Thanks for that. It is one of the routes I am taking, as you say they are probably quoting the same source but so far not much success no one gives a reference.

Hi Phill, I was going to refer you to the blackcountrymuse.com site but having just looked I think you've already found it lol.

Could LE HAYESCHUTE be somewhere near Pool hayes area? I think Pool hayes comes under Willenhall now but is very close to Wednesfield. Thee was definately a mine there.....

Thank you Lisa, I have been in touch on the blackcountrymuse site, and find it most useful, I have commented in the forum at times.i agree Le Hayeshute is most likely to be in the pool Hayes area. This is a very old settlement. I wonder if the name is LE (lea ,a meadow) HAYES (an enclosed area) CHUTE ( possibly ME or MG for a messy place)

I have the deaths and the register for the people I have been searching for. they were killed in a mine accident at New Cross.  I am researching this and other aspect of the coalfield in the area and have been looking for Gubbins Lane. Some one has suggested Deans Road but I need to go looking for maps in the archives.

I know deans road was definitely known as deans road in the 1870s but have never heard of gubbins lane...ill have a Google and see what I can find. How far back are you thinking?

I can see some mention of "Gubbins and Balls Ironstone" on the archives site which is on an 1862 map by Bowmans Harbour (if I'm reading it all right)....I guess u know where Bowmans Harbour was. Its actually about a 5 minute walk form where I live, which is also next to New Cross Hospital, so Im guessing New Cross Collery would be in the same area as New Cross now. (I may have a mine shaft underneath me now as we speak lol).

Thank you for that,Lisa. Gubbins is a type of ironstone, I have a map of New Cross Colliery with gubbins and balls shown.
I have found a reference in the Victoria County History for le hayschute which I have to follow up. I am sure it is in the Woodhayes area.
I hope your house does not fall into a mine!
