Hi Kali,

Not sure if this is going off at a tangent, but let's try it and see:

Google found this site for SY MONTSEILLER

http://sygenealogy.home.comcast.net/Coat_of_Arms.html

It is about the SY Family and includes several coats of arms,
This image is found in the book "Sy Hugenotten: Stammtafeln der Familien Sy aus der Uckermark" by Johanna Oqueka and Hans Wendt. On the bottom is written "Sy de Montseiller". Another source describes the coat of arms as a seal on a watch chain.

I don't know if Montseiller is french for seal (The Seal of the Sy Family)
or if your Sy Montseillers were originally Sy de Montseiller ???

It was the only Google hit for SY MONTSEILLER or for MONTSEILLER
(a Googlewhack !)

Regards,
Bob

Montsellier is a town in France - it's possible Montseiller is the old spelling.   (I know of a Meiller family in French-speaking Switzerland which became Mellier.)  In that case, Bob's suggestion that the family was originally Sy de Monseiller (Sy from Montseiller) is very likely.

I'm glad you liked my Sy Genealogy website.

And thanks to the others regarding the word Montseiller. I had googled for it and didn't find anything. Now I will google for Montsellier. That may be one of the missing links I need.

I am interested in anything that may help me find the origins of the SY family in France in about the 16th century.  My SY family were members of the French Reformed Church (Huguenot). That is were I have a brick wall. I can trace the SY family to approximately the time of the origin of the French Reformed Church; however, that is where the line ends.

I have Googled on Montsellier; however, I did not find anything about the location of Montsellier. Can anyone tell me of the general location of Montsellier, France?

I know there is a village of "SY" in France located Northeast of Paris.

I found Montsellier on Google (French version), and I'm sure it said it was near Nīmes.  However, the reference has now disappeared, and I can't find anything like it in a French atlas, so I've a horrible feeling it might have been a typo for Montpellier, in which case I'm sorry for misleading you...
