Occupations of fathers?

On a marriage certificate for the Isle of Man 1869.

Could the occupation of both fathers be Farmer?  Very bad handwriting    I can't make out the street name of the groom either.  Pat ?? Street, Douglas.

I'd hazard a guess at 'Farmer' - and the street name begins with the same letter.  Can't be 'Pat' - compare the letter shape with 'Peel' below.

It does look like that, doesn't it?  There is a Fort Street in Douglas - I wonder whether it might be that (although it doesn't look much like it!)

I wonder whether Manx National Heritage might be able to help?

Could be Tanner even possibly Farrier or Mariner?

They are difficult to read. I would be trying to find both fathers in the 1861 and 1871 censuses in case that helps .....

I am voting for Farmer.

If you look at the other words on the page the letters are not joined up very well and are not consistent. Look at the word "Douglas" - there doesn't seem to be a proper o formed, nor an s, but it still reads Douglas.

I think you need to glean a general impression of the word rather than analysing it and trying to work out how each loop and line were formed.

It looks like Fat St and Farmer to me. There is no dot over the word which indicates no i. It's the same letter (F?) that starts each word.

I was thinking Farmer as well. And thanks to Ruskie's comment about the "o" in Douglas, I'd say Fort Street was a strong possibility for the address.

I'd say almost certainly Fort Street!
Which still survives, although no housing.

There were wholesale street clearances in the 1890's and 1930's in all the areas and little streets around North Quay. So the area has changed drastically.

If it's that important, maybe I could check at the Manx Museum?
