1841 Hounslow barracks lookup?
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 17:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for John Breese who enlisted in the 11th Hussars in Hounslow in March 1841.

His military records state he was born abt 1817 in St Sidwells Exeter (although I have been unable to confirm this)

I'm wondering if by June 1841 census he was living in the regimental barracks. Does anyone have access to records for the barracks in 1841 census? Sorry I don't have an address

Any help appreciated?

regards
Sarah

HI Sarah

There is indeed a John Breese in the Hounslow Barracks in 1841- he is said to be 20- but of course ages were not always exact in 1841.
HO107/658/4

There are dozens of them- he is listed as a soldier and all the ages have been rounded up or down to 20 and 25.

Not sure if this helps you or not?

Regards

Carol

By the way as you already knew,he wasn't born in Middx  ;)

I note this one has been answered....just adding a bit on the age thing

In 1841 they employed a rounding down process on age to the nearest 5 or 0
ie 20-25=20, 25-30=25 etc etc

And just for the record .......... your JOHN BREESE aged 20 soldier was born in County ie MIDDLESEX............ all those around him were not! but according to the 1841 census...........he was  ;D

Hi there

Sorry I read that birth place as a Y but now looking again with a magnifying glass I can see it might be an N.  ;)

I suppose as you had already said you thought he was born in Exeter-that;s what I was expecting to see.

Maybe I should do all these look ups with that damn magnifying glass  :-[

anything is possible....Middlesex, Devon, even Northumberland

John Breese's place of birth varies with every document/census
His obituary in one newspaper says he was a "foundling" washed up on a beach as a baby clinging to a piece of wood after the ship he was travelling on broke up at sea ... he was named by the captain that found him as no-one knew his parents.... :-)

one of the more unusual family tree stories I imagine :-)
