Helen Milne/Joseph Shirras
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 14:56 BST (UK) »
I have a Helen Milne who was born to parents George Milne and Eliza Kemp in 1861. She married Joseph Shirras in 1901 and was his second wife. I am assuming they had no children being the age she was and that I cannot find any record.
I have found her death certificate in 1938 but cannot find her birth record, marriage record to Joseph, nor can I find her on any census as living with her family. I have the 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census for her parents but she doesn't feature anywhere. In the 1871 census her 8 year old brother John is there but she is not even though she is of similar age.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

There is a birth on Scotlands People for a Helen Milne in Oyne in 1860 and I wonder if she is boarding with the Cruickshank    family in 1861 in Oyne - listed as Helen Milne 0 b Oyne

Helen seems to be in Newhills in 1891, as a cook in the household of one Henry Charles Hadden - can't seem to find her in 1881. Henry Hadden was unmarried and in England in 1881, so she must be with another household.

My Grandfather. William Milne, was born in Oyne. I think he was a brother to Helen. My Mother (Grace Eliza Milne) told my sister and I, that he had been married to one of the Shirras sister. She had died in childbirth. One of her brothers (?) married William's sister. My Grandfather gravitated to Newcastle upon Tyne and became a successful builder in the town. He married Ellen Heslop. They had my mother. An only child.

Thank you for all the replies. I am interested to hear more about your family Angela. Was your William born in 1867 as I have one pencilled in but not confirmed? His brother James (my nan's grandfather) went down to Newcastle and also became a builder, it became a family trait and they contributed to some of the building still standing proud today.

William Milne married Elizabeth Sherrifs (Shirras). In 1878 they had a son, John.  William can be found at 6yrs old  in the 1841 Census for Oyne.
