Lucke family of Rotherfield, Sussex
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 14:33 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate any information on Magdalin Lucke. The only information I have at present is that she married George Hosmer in 1585 in Rotherfield. George was baptised in Rotherfield in 1545 & they went on to have at least 6 children, all baptised in Rotherfield.

I have been unable to locate Magdalin's baptism or death & subsequently I have not been able to identify who her parents or siblings were.

I have found an Edward Lucke whose sons John & Edward were baptised in Rotherfield in 1592 & 1600, Edward senior may possibly be a brother to Magdalin?? I have not been able to locate a Magdalin Lucke being baptised in the areas around Rotherfield.

Any assistance in locating details of Magdalins parents or siblings would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Carbar

When I come across a situation like that I do two things firstly.

I don't know what sources you are using and whether this is at all possible but what I do is search using lots of different possible spellings for Magdalin - Magda, Magdaline, Madeline, etc and then search through Rotherfield records and note every other Lucke, Luck, Luke etc I can find.

It is possible that Edward could be a brother, have you checked out his marriage for any clues there?

Have you searched for any wills for any Lucks in the area at that time?

Two things or possible three!

Sussex Marriage Index has her as Madeline Lucke married George Hosmer at Rotherfield on 14 November 1585.

I had to search on George Hosmer because my first search on Magdalin Lucke brought up the following:
Magdaline Lucke (m) married Ursula Pusanna at Rotherfield on 14 November 1585.  Magdaline is down as the male!!

Confused!

I have also searched through the online source I use and could find no Lucke or any other spelling being baptised at Rotherfield Parish Church between 1545 and 1575.  So did she come from somewhere else?

Possible burial for her:

- Hosmer, wife of George buried at Rotherfield, St Deny (Parish Church) on 6 May 1632.

Shame it doesn't show her first name.

There was a burial for him in 1624 and had him as a weaver.

Hi Kerry, just a thought, would she be described as 'wife of' if he pre-deceased her ?  I guess the answer is yes if they are the only two candidates  :-\ :-\

Good point Suey.  There was a burial for another George in 1634 which could fit.

1634 - Looks to be the better fit  :D

Another possible.  I have a Hosman often mixed up with Hosmer or Heasman  ::)

Thank you so much for trying to help.
I have located basic details of other Luckes in Rotherfield from 1600 onwards - I am presuming these are nieces & nephews or even the following generation. I have also located other Luckes in Burwash who married around the time of Magdalins marriage - Alice Lucke marrying a Robert Iredge in 1574 & an Elizabeth marrying an Anthony Longley in 1583 but I have just hit a brick wall with locating her baptism or any mention of her prior to her marriage. I have looked through baptisms in surrounding villages, especially those that have any Luckes. It is possible that Magdalin was actually a middle name for her?? so maybe I need to revisit all searches of baptisms in the area in case it shows a baptism for a female Lucke with a middle name of Magdalin.

George appears to be a very common name for Hosmers. George had a son George baptised 1592 in Rotherfield & there is another George Hosmer of Rotherfield who married a Priscilla Poulter in 1609.

Thanks again for your suggestions
Carole

Hi Carbar

This morning I have had a look at a CD I have of Mayfield baptisms, burials and marriages etc and there are a lot of Luckes.

Unfortunately the parish register for Mayfield didn't start until 1570 so if Magdalin was baptised there it would probably be before then anyway.  But it might be a start.  I noticed a number of Margarets and Margareys as well as Margarite.  Maybe a family name?

Mayfield is an adjoining parish as I am sure you know so might be a starting point.
