Ancestry are showing 5 Matthew Thompson's all born in the north. Yorkshire and Durham mostly.

According to on line references he was born on IOW in 1750, but these don't give vital records. Since he is mentioned so many times in the various publications regarding the mutiny and the following activities of the mutineers it may be possible to find out more. He was killed by Tahitians so there most probably won't be any death record for him. Have you looked at Mr Google? Fran

It might be worth contacting the IOW FHS - research@isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk to see if they know.

Also the Pitcairn Islands Study Centre at Pacific Union College would be a good place to enquire. Fran

Hi,

The IOW Record office has a card index to all baptisms, marriages and burials from 1539-1900, hey might e able to help you,

https://www.iwight.com/Residents/Libraries-Cultural-and-Heritage/Records-Office/Record-Office/Research-Guides

Scroll down on one of their links, and it will give you more info about these records,

https://www.iwight.com/azservices/documents/1386-FAMILY%20HISTORY%20RESEACH%20CURRENT.pdf

It looks like the Research Service will do a free search for "A check of up to 10 years for a baptism, marriage or burial in the card index which covers the period 1538-1900. For baptisms, the names of any siblings within the same period will be supplied"

I've found that sometimes they help if you just call them, especially if you have a close date.

Good luck :)
Daisy
